Momentus XT 500go as an external mass storage : experience and tips

[

  this concern Momentus XT 500go

can't tell about the firmware version for now, drivedetect.exe won't detected it in an external storage configuration

]

Hi,

Well, using this HD for external storage purpose looks kinda dumb. Actually, I bought this HD for a HTPC but

as I need temporary backup space right now, 500 go is always welcome.

I plugged the HD in a noname ext usb case and started transfering some Go. He did the job fine until I lost the

connection and the HD starts beeping. That's happened as soon as I tried to move the case to an other spot. I think

the poor case factory could be the origin of the trouble. I tried to plug back the HD but at this stage, windows is not

even trying to mount the HD.

I think the trouble came following those steps :

step 1 : connection lost because of the move of the poor ext case factory.

step 2 : HD is plugged back but windows can't mount it. That's probably because on the second plug, the momentus XT

start to use its 4go SSD for the first time and now needs more power (makes sense with the windows difficulties to mount it)

the "fix" :

I used a special cable composed by 1 tiny usb and 2 regular usb. This cable was shipped with an older ext usb case to be able

to connect an ext usb drive to an usb 1.1 only capable computer. The 2 usb covering the lack of power of the usb 1.1 ports. In this

very situation it will help to have more power using 2 usb2.0 ports

Here a picture :

And voila, this add of power allowed me to finish my backup free of troubles.

I know this thread will probably help 1 user for 10.000. But hey, it don't cost much money !

(not perfect english, sry about that)

TL;DR :

If you want for whatever reason using this HD as an external USB mass storage, make use of 2 USB ports using

a "not so special" 1tiny usb+2regular usb cable. A regular 1/1 cable do not deliver enough power as soon as the

4go SSD is solicited.
