Yes. I wiped the hard drive completely, and installed a brand new copy of the Mac OS. No recovery drives. No carbon copying.

The logical next suspect is the Apple motherboard, connectors, and so on.

I took the same hard drive and tried to install it on another Macbook Pro, this time an earlier model, and the same thing happened. The drive would not be recognized, and didn't seem to be spinning up at all.

Is there any reason you want from ProtagonistZ to Protagonist0?
I will wait for the OP to sign on before commenting further.

I'm not sure what happened. I was posting as ProtagonistZ for a few posts, and then all of a sudden it asked me to enter a screen name. When I tried entering ProtagonistZ it said it was already in use. So I had to pick something else.
Who knows why. It's the same account.

Based on everthyng the OP has done I would also agree that you may have a bad drive. If Seagate is willing to replace your drive then your logical next step is to test with the recently replaced drive. If the same thing happens again then do take your computer into Apple and let them know what is happening. If you the error does present itself again most likely your logic board has failed. which is even more rare then a hard drive failure. Best of luck and when you do get your XT up and working you will really enjoy it. I have loved it since it was launched.

If you bought your drive at retail, it is time to get a new sample, and retest... if it still fails..you are down to motherboard, connectors, cables... installation.
At this stage I recommend swapping drive and having it professionally installed by an experienced installer who will be looking for bad ribbon cables, connectors, etc.
