Ok,
I found this: http://www.seagate.com/docs/pdf/whitepaper/tp615_s
my drive is the MXT 750 - ST750LX003-1AC154, and it should contain the smartalign technology.
Do I need to clean-install it however?
Installing OSX Lion from scratch I know that it will create the "Recovery HD" partition (I think a hidden one, I'm not so sure).
With this partition have I to check something else to be sure to have an "aligned resulting drive"?
Is there any document/tutorial/etc anywhere to Install a OSX on a Momentus XT? Utilities for Apple?
Thanks

A clean install is always recommended because it gets you the latest drivers and least legacy conflicts.
If you can get a later version of the OS, that is a bonus.

WiseDrive,
I bougth my MacbookPro at mid january, the momentus xt one week later... so drivers/os/firmware are the same and upgraded.
I cloned my "original" (not advanced format toshiba drive) into momentus xt with carbon copy cloner... I think this is a "file-copy" cloner (not a sector-by-sector... I think.... but I need to investigate).
Before cloning I did: 1) new partition of momentus xt 750, 2) format as MacOS journaled fs, 3) restored the cloned copy.
Now I can re-try.... during the weekend. Can you please confirm the following process?
So I should:
I think I can also restore Lion directly from TimeMachine... should be the same thing, shouldn't it?
In your opinion is this the correct way to have maximum performance?
Many thanks

Critical to know what it is --- cloning means you don't start with the right drivers unless they are on there already and detected and installed automatically.
Before cloning I did: 1) new partition of momentus xt 750, 2) format as MacOS journaled fs, 3) restored the cloned copy.
If you have any malware like a rootkit, by doing so, it probably placed it on it.
Now I can re-try.... during the weekend. Can you please confirm the following process?
So I should:
- get the OSX Lion on a USB drive (I hope),
Or latest Mac OS
Or an external DVD reader
- then re-format the momenuts XT 750 with one partition of 500GB (I want to keep some free unpartitioned space 250GB). Have I to check something?
Why not let the Mac OSX installer do a clean format?
Use the installer to delete all present formats, then start fresh --- to eliminate most rooktits and sophisticated malware.
The installer, if like windows, will let you create new partitions as per your needs.
- install Lion (could be that Lion creates a hidden partition/image for recovery)
It probably does...
- upgrade Lion to the latest revision
Could you not just buy the DVD from the Apple store and use it for the install?
- restore my latest backup from TimeMachine (this is a file-copy operation).
Only after anti-malware installed, operating properly, all patches to protect OS installed.
I think I can also restore Lion directly from TimeMachine... should be the same thing, shouldn't it?
Dont know.

The way to maximum performance, once you installed the latest Mac OS and drivers, is to condition the drive with 10-15 bootups.
Macs go to suspend, and delays the conditioning process.
For the near future, even after above, do full shutdowns and startups until the machine stabilize.
Then go back to the suspend (instant start) routine.
IMHO, you will really like it... my machines, even the cheapie i3, is quite quick with the XT 750s.

Ok after spending 2 days reading this forum AND trying most of the solutions I have the same problem...
Step 1
XT750 drive clonned using Super Duper into a Macbook Pro (2.66Ghz intel Core 2 Duo w/8GB ram).
Won't recognize drive when connected in the drive bay of the Macbook Pro (won't even turn on)
won't recognize= Flashing folder with "?".
I have allowed this flashing folder to go on for more than 15 minutes with no change
XT750 WILL boot from external USB case as long as it has independent power.
Step 2
Erased and reformatted dive using disk utility and then tried to clone again.
Same results as above
Step 3
Erased drive using disk utility and reformatted
Did a new clean install of Lion
Migrated data from Time Machine
Same result
Step 4
Erased drive AGAIN
Clean install of Lion ONLY
Same results.
Now, it seems to me that the powerbook doesn't have sufficient power to use the drive.....is there anyone out here using a similar model AND has a working XT750 installed?
I read the reviews when I bought this drive and I assumed the bad reviews were just DOA drives but this seems to be a bigger issue.
Please....any further suggestions?
This doesn't seem to be an isolated problem so....please if you have had this problem AND fixed it, please let me know.

I installed mine now.
The first time I open DISK UTILITY from Lion Install CD, the window was unchangeable, I can't click on nothing to choose any drive listed.
Then I close the DISK UTILIY and open again from MENU BAR.
This time I could choose the HD to make the partition.
PAY ATENTION: CLOSE AND OPEN DISK UTILITY TO CHOOSE THE HD.
My Lion runs ROCK SOLID ![]()

That still ddn't work. It's as though the disc isn't getting enough power. It doesn't matter how you tell the Mac which disc to boot with.

I bought a 750 XT this afternoon...I have a mid-09 macbookpro, 8 gb mem, a firewire superduper bootable clone drive..
I placed the new XT in the chassis
booted up, teh big question mark appeared
connected my FW bootable backup
teh mac booted off the cloned backup as soon as the FW was connected
once the mac was up, I opened disk utility
Disk Util saw the 750-XT, and i did a partition
DU then formatted the drive and named it..
I then did a super-duper copy from the FW clone to the new XT
then made it a bootable copy via super duper
when it was complete, i rebooted the mac
it came up on the new XT with no issues..
On a speed test, the FW drive is 75, the XT is 105...nearly 50% better..

Hi all,
For some reason my old account here is not valid anymore, so I created a new one.
I'm having some problems, but even worse than just not spinning down.
I've bought a Seagate Momentus XT 750GB, installed in my MacBook Pro 15" mid 2010 (which came with a Seagate Momentus 500GB 7200RPM), created single partition and restored my OS (Lion 10.7.3) straight from TimeMachine (4th generation TimeCapsule).
Everything worked like a charm, until I noticed the MBP wouldn't wake up from sleep.
So if I put the computer to sleep, it works just fine - it spins down the drive and the white light starts flashing. But if I leave the computer like that overnight, next day it doesn't wake up. I can hear the drive spinning, but nothing happens, so I have to help power button to shutdown and then start it again.
I changed my settings to go to sleep after a minute idle, and it turns off the screen, the while light comes up but doesn't flash and the disk keeps spinning. If I press anything it wakes up though, but I'm not sure if it will after a few hours.
So reading about the issue on every single forum out there, I decided to clean install Lion. I'm doing it as I write this and hope it will fix the problem. I think I'm not going to restore from TimeMachine even after a clean install, just to see how it goes.
I can't believe it's a compatibility issue as the hard drive which came with the MBP is a Seagate Momentus as well (just older and not hybrid). They actually physically look exactly the same, but one reading "Seagate Momentus 500GB" and the other "Seagate Momentus XT 750GB".
I have another XT running in a HP Elitebook 8460p with Windows 7 Enterprise 64bit (bought both together at the same store) and it runs beautifully, no problems what so ever.
I will let you know how it goes as soon as I finish the install and my testing ![]()

Installed my Momentus XT 750GB (ST750LX003-1AC154) drive a couple of weeks in my MacBookPro6,2
and the performance and battery life got worse.
CPU has to work harder and the MBP does not go into sleep properly all the time.
Used SuperDuper during migration. Will do a clean install and see if that helps.
