Re: Momentus XT 750GB not spinning down at idle under MacOS Lion

I do NOT have "find my mac" (iCloud) or "wake for network access" (energy saver) on.  I am still having the problem with the drive not spinning itself down, I have to force it to sleep by closing the lid.  I DID do a full clean install of Lion and moved my data over manuall.

Re: Momentus XT 750GB not spinning down at idle under MacOS Lion

So I did a clean reinstall and found things to be better, but not definitively solved. I found turning off Back to My Mac etc to help. I also found uninstalling Google Drive to be a big help (Google Drive seems to have been very poorly coded - check your console). Also a major boost was using Onyx. Using Onyx, I deleted the boot and and kernel and extensions cache, restarted, and have had a much happier mac since. You mileage may vary, but it seems to have helped. If you don't know Onyx and want to use it, please download it from here: www.titanium.free.fr/ . I noticed that the first google result for Onyx Mac is a dodgy site - please avoid it!

Re: Momentus XT 750GB not spinning down at idle under MacOS Lion

I have a Momentus XT 500 and had it set to never sleep, never spin down etc. Now I installed a ssd in my optical bay on which my System is running. So now I also set the energy saver on spin disc down if possible.

I notice that my hard XT drive now spins down and restarts regularly even though there are no obvious processes running, because I use the XT now only for audio, video and pictures. And when i am not using them you might think the drive should spin down. However some activity you don't think or know of; may keep the drive spinning. One for example is a widget called iStat Pro which checks the temperature of the drive, and to do so it will make the drive spin.

There may be more of such unknown or not so obvious causes for your drive to keep spinning. But if it keeps spinning while it should go to sleep is not normal. I would try a reset smc command.

In other cases like keeping the lid open and walk away with the screensaver at work, should spin the disc down eventually, but it may take time.

Re: Momentus XT 750GB not spinning down at idle under MacOS Lion

No, the XT 750GB does not spin down, no matter how long I leave it.   The stock hard drive spun down and let the MBP go to sleep.  With the XT 750GB installed it will not go to sleep unless I shut the lid.

(This is not due to programs running either, a similar set of things were running on the stock drive, probably more things, and that slept fine.)

Re: Momentus XT 750GB not spinning down at idle under MacOS Lion

if youdid not try it, do a smc reset. I think this should be done because you use another drive. But it may not resolve the issue. Some processes keep the drive running in that case. The XT works different from another drive. The NAND may stay active etc. etc. It may do recalculations on how to behave and more. In any way I observed a huge improvement of my macbook pro after I started to use the XT drive. Getting more RAM also made a huge difference. But with an ssd it works as never before (so far).

If it is very important for you to use the mac on it's battery I would complain a bit more with seagate. Or ask money back and buy a ssd. Otherwise I would just accept it. I just set my energy preference to 'never sleep and don't spin down the drives. I hate this slow response of my computer when I do something on an external or on the internal xt drive. For audio editing like protools it is a must otherwise it does not even work.

I am going to try to downgrade my EFI from 1.7 to 1.6 as outlined here:

This did not work, I am still getting crashes and the laptop will still not spin down or go to sleep without forcing it.  It seems that Seagate and Apple are not working well together on this.

Re: Momentus XT 750GB not spinning down at idle under MacOS Lion

Guys,

Count me in :smileywink: I'm very happy with the performance so far on my 2011 MBP 15.

I've noticed this problem and I tried resetting the SMC in hope that OSX Lion would play well with this Momentus XT 750, but it did not help. It's a minor problem for me personally, since I have a habit of closing the laptop after I'm done. But it would be nice for Seagate to fix this with a new FW realease, given the stock hard drive is a Seagate 500GB  that I'm replacing :smileysurprised:

Re: Momentus XT 750GB not spinning down at idle under MacOS Lion

[ Edited ]

Hi guys, I registered here because initially my XT did appear to behave the same way.

But I was wrong, yesterday night I left my macbook like before swapping the drive, and after 20 minutes it was sleeping like a baby, so definitely this is not an issue for everyone. It just takes some time (I was eager to see it sleeping, but also with my previous Hitachi 5k500.b it takes some time to mac os to go to full sleep and make the drive spin down). I even tried the terminal command sudo pmset -a disksleep 1 to make it spin down after 1 minute with no avail. But I don't know, now it just works if I don't pay attention (keeping finger crossed).

I got a clean Mountain Lion install, a Macbook 13" mid 2010 (7,1), latest EFI, Momentus XT 750 with SM12 manufactured on July 2012. I haven't tinkered a lot yet, but I have locate my mac deactivated, and "keep network active etc." deactivated.

Hope this helps some way.
