Momentus XT, Momentus, Momentus Thin, MobileMax, and other notebook drives

Several on this forum have reported that their 750GB Momentus XT drives will not spin down under MacOS Lion (despite choosing the option to do so in the OS).  Here are two threads discussing this = thread1  --   thread2

Emailing with Seagate Technical Support, they said they had no reports of this, so I am pulling this thread together to show that there are already existing reports on their forums.  If your Momentus XT 750GB is not spinning down under MacOS Lion, please reply here.

In my latest exchange with Seagate Tech Support they suggest applying the 500GB Momentus XT firmware, but that sounds crazy (see below).  I've asked for confirmation/clarification about this and haven't yet gotten a reply.  Does anyone have any further information about this or about the lack of spinning down problem?  Thanks!

Thank you for contacting Seagate.  I apologize about the continued problems you are having with your internal hard drive.

I recommend updating the firmware to this version.  This should take care of the problem you are experiencing.

Seagate replied and said that yes, SM12 is the current firmware for the XT 750gb and one should not put SD28 on it. Does anyone have a Momentus XT 750GB that is spinning down under MacOS Lion?  Under a different MacOS???

I need help in determining the scope of this problem to let Seagate and Apple know, since they seem unwilling to do the research and testing themselves.

Apple policy is not to support user installed hardware.

I am hoping that Seagate will take note of this and work with Apple to make their drive work properly in Lion.

If you look at the hassles with the original XT 500 and the issues with XT2 750 (relatively few).

Apple related issues are probably 60 percent of the total.

Legacy apple issues are the only ones left for the XT 750.

Apple is a tough company to work with because of the closed architecture.

Yes, it is noted, and a lot of work went into XT2 from XT to make it more compatible.

But Apple is not about to retroactively fix anything unless it is real major.

Going forward, it wiill be OK with 2012 Macs ahd XT2.

Hence no new firmware has been released for XT 2.

Have just started having the same problem with my Momentus XT750GB - under Snow Leopard though this time.

It was running fine for the last couple of weeks until today. There's nothing showing as particularly active in Activity Monitor - I can see the odd 100k or 200k read every now and again, but can't see what's triggering it.

There's nothing odd in Console. SpindownHD just shows the drive as permanently "Active" now.... it's a real pity, it seemed like a great drive until today

For some reason my old account here is not valid anymore, so I created a new one.

I'm having some problems, but even worse than just not spinning down.

I've bought a Seagate Momentus XT 750GB, installed in my MacBook Pro 15" mid 2010 (which came with a Seagate Momentus 500GB 7200RPM), created single partition and restored my OS (Lion 10.7.3) straight from TimeMachine (4th generation TimeCapsule).

Everything worked like a charm, until I noticed the MBP wouldn't wake up from sleep.

So if I put the computer to sleep, it works just fine - it spins down the drive and the white light starts flashing. But if I leave the computer like that overnight, next day it doesn't wake up. I can hear the drive spinning, but nothing happens, so I have to help power button to shutdown and then start it again.

I changed my settings to go to sleep after a minute idle, and it turns off the screen, the while light comes up but doesn't flash and the disk keeps spinning. If I press anything it wakes up though, but I'm not sure if it will after a few hours.

So reading about the issue on every single forum out there, I decided to clean install Lion. I'm doing it as I write this and hope it will fix the problem. I think I'm not going to restore from TimeMachine even after a clean install, just to see how it goes.

I can't believe it's a compatibility issue as the hard drive which came with the MBP is a Seagate Momentus as well (just older and not hybrid). They actually physically look exactly the same, but one reading "Seagate Momentus 500GB" and the other "Seagate Momentus XT 750GB".

I have another XT running in a HP Elitebook 8460p with Windows 7 Enterprise 64bit (bought both together at the same store) and it runs beautifully, no problems what so ever.

I will let you know how it goes as soon as I finish the install and my testing

I know it's not the same issue but could be related overall, sorry I can't add anymore as I've never had a Mac so know nothing about them tbh.

Good news. After installing Lion from scratch and NOT restoring my TimeMachine backup, everything works just fine

WIll the computer go to sleep with applications running?

(I installed Lion from scratch and moved over data, not restored from TimeMachine)
