Momentus XT ST750LX003 750 Gb terrible slow performance Windows 7 64 Bits

Hi there,

I just upgrade my Toshiba laptop HDD from a 320 Gb Hitachi 5400 Rpm to Seagate Momentus XT ST750LX003 750 Gb.

My old drive has performing flawless but I needed more space so I purchased Seagate Momentus XT because of 7200 Rpm and SSD Hybrid technology. But My laptop now has serious performance issues, with the old drive reading directories with a lot of files was almost instant, now this takes from 5 to 10 seconds. Boot times are the same as old drive, but copying and reading and listing directories are a LOT slower than my old 5400 Hitachi.

Any help is really appreciated.

My specs:

AMD PhenomII N660 Dual Core 3Ghz

DDR3 1066 8GB

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 Chipset AMD M880G

Windows 7 Enterprise 64 Bits

Anyone??

I'm very disappointed with this HDD, my old Hitachi 5400 Rpm was faster in every aspect to this Momentus XT 7200 Rpm.

Do a fresh, clean install from factory OS disks, and update drivers.

Re: Momentus XT ST750LX003 750 Gb terrible slow performance Windows 7 64 Bits

@ Dark

Why have you partitioned it like that, you only need the system one and the main one mate, partitioning is only really any use for multiple O/S's on one drive

And make sure the older drives aren't in lower port numbers, so you need the XT in port 0, and the rest of your drives behind that, i.e port 1 port 2 etc

Boot times are also dependant on what you have loading up as well, so an SSD with 25 utilitiy programs to wade through at boot time will take longer to boot to windows, those magic video's you see around the web of 10 second boots are basically software bare and on a PC that's been O/C'd to 4.5GHZ, a proper SSD will always be faster than an XT anyway.

To give you an idea, my boot is around 35 seconds, I have an OCZ Agility and an XT, at boot time I can't split them the OCZ takes just as long as the XT, if you want to see the fastest it's going to boot, wipe it reload it and don't put anything other than MB drivers on it, then re-boot it a few times so the Nand gets to write what it needs to optomise, this is then when you will see the fastest boot, and don't have any other drives connected at the time, hth.

Re: Momentus XT ST750LX003 750 Gb terrible slow performance Windows 7 64 Bits

I have 2 partitions, (250-500 Gb), and this Momentus XT was way slower than my old Hitachi from the beginning, I did a fresh install of W7 64 Bits, nothing change. The big problem is the slow reading and copying files. My usb HDD reads folders faster that the Momentus.

Do you think this could be because of W7 64 Bits?

[ Edited ]

It shouldn't be win 7 doing it, I have it on mine and it's lightning fast to boot and to transfer.

Check you have it connected in the lowest and fastest sata port on your MB avoiding the Marvell ports, make sure AHCi is enabled as well.

I have it running on at least 3 different brand machines running Win 7 64.

No problems whatsoever.

Re: Momentus XT ST750LX003 750 Gb terrible slow performance Windows 7 64 Bits

I just change one of my 500 GB Momentus XT for the 750 GB and i also have the same problem.

File copy time between drives is good but boot time and program load time is horrible.

I also have two partitions  but it was not a problem on the 500 GB drive.

Can Seagate comment on whether any specific tuning parameters or drivers  are required for the larger drive. I also notice that in the cloning Acronis created a larger cluster size so i have included this information if useful.  I have just done a clean install  into the partition and if anything the problem seems to be worse.

Laptop ASUS G73 JW i7

Windows 7 Sp1  64  bit

8 GB Ram

1 x Momentus 750 GB  FW: SM12  (16GB Recovery Partition,  150GB OS , 530 GB Data)   4096 Bytes Allocation Unit

1 x Momentus 500 GB  FW: SD28  ( 233GB Data , 233 GB Data)     4096 Bytes Allocation Unit

Windows reports 5.9 on the experience index for primary disk (was 5.8  on the 500 GB)

Piniform Defraggler benchmark shows random read speed of

4.54    MB/s   for the 750 GB

20.15 MB/s  for the 500 GB

This looks bad
