Is this like some secret or something?  After searching for hours, I'm finally giving in and asking straight out.

How do I find out the secret code name of my hard-drive?  For instance, I keep coming across these family names for other Seagate drives: ANAK, BRINKS, MOOSE, TONKA, GALAXY, PHAROAH, HOLLIDAY

Thanks!  That solves half the mystery for me.

I'm still at a bit of a loss about the serial terminal interface (hardware or software?  or both?), but I think I was barking up the wrong tree with that line of questioning.

I'm pretty sure now that my drive is an ANAK.  It is a Seagate Momentus XT ST95005620AS.  I thought there might be a different model family for the drive because I'm trying to process a firmware update manually and keep getting the "Wrong Model" result.  This drive came installed within a Toshiba Satellite E-305 laptop I won earlier this year, so it is OEM.  As such, it contains some type or proprietary firmware (TD-27) which isn't compatible with the automatic upgrade process.

I want to process the update to Seagate SD28 because with the current firmware (TD-27), NCQ is incompatible and has been intentionally disabled.  I am willing to take the risk because I found other users with Toshiba's TD-27 firmware who have successfully processed the update to SD-28 and have acheived better performance as well as functional NCQ'ing because of it.  And because the laptop is completely supplemental to my current system, it has no info in it yet, I've already copied an image from the recovery partition, and everything is still under warranty so if gosh forbid I mess anything up, it's not a big deal.

So first I went to BIOS and set SATA to compliant so the drive is reading as PATA.  And then I'm using the MomentusXT-ALL-SD28.iso. to get to the Seagate boot prompt and then typing the following:

FDL497A -m ANAK -f ANSD28.LOD -i ST95005620AS -s -x -b -v -a 20

That's where I've been stuck for the past day or two.  I just get "Wrong Model" over and over again.  I thought it might be something other than ANAK, but now I'm not so sure.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.  I'm at a stand-still.

I can't understand why that command line doesn't work for you.

If you run SeaTools for Windows, there will be a *.ATA file, where the asterisk is the drive's serial number. This 512-byte file will contain the drive's Identify Device data. If you upload it, we could check the model number as reported by the drive.

Alternatively, you could connect to the drive's serial console and capture the sign-on information. A Ctrl-Z should reset the drive and cause it to report its family ID, cache size, etc. A Ctrl-L should report its firmware "pack version".

This has really been puzzling me.  I'm very tempted to connect via serial interface, but I don't have the proper equipment.  I will keep that option in mind and check with my brother to see if he can assist later today.

For the time being, I found the .ata file to which you referred and have attached it herewith.  I appreciate your looking into this.  I also reached out directly to one of the other users who reported success with updating from TD-27 to SD-28, to see if maybe he'd give me a clue as to how he got it to work.  But I'm still waiting to hear back from him.

I was at a stand-still before, but I realize now there are some other elements of the drive that I should back up if I want to retain the built-in repair/recovery options.  So now I will have plenty to keep me busy in the meantime.  I will let you know if the other user gets back to me and if my brother will help me out with the serial interface when I know more.  Thanks again!

It appears that the problem may be that your drive is identifying itself as a "Seagate ST95005620AS" rather than "ST95005620AS". Therefore try substituting "Seagate" for "ST95005620AS" in your command line. I expect that anything after the space in the model number will be ignored.

As always, the risk is yours.

Hi.  I'm back to conclude this thread with my thanks, as your advice was completely correct.  After deliberating for a few days, and then extensively backing up, I gave your suggestion a try by changing the -i argument to Seagate.  And it worked!  I was greeted by the bright blue SUCCESS message almost immediately.

Now Intel Rapid Storage Software reports that Native Command Queuing is enabled.  Otherwise, the drive has been running well; I have not noticed any problems after the update but I will report back if I do so that others won't make the same potential mistake.  As it is now, the update seems to have caused no ill effects.

I've purchased the SEAGATE ST95005620AS, FW Version TD27 and installed it in my Dell Latitude 6500 W7 64-bit. Strictly following the recommended procedure (see corresponding forum entries re. this problem) I upgraded the FW to the latest available form SEAGATE (SD28). Now both NCQ and 3 Gb/s are available for this drive. The only suggestion I have is to use uppercase drive name (SEAGATE and not Seagate), as follows:

FDL497A -m ANAK -f ANSD28.LOD -i SEAGATE -s -x -b -v -a 20
