Momentus XT and Diskeeper 2011 Pro with HyperFast

Hello forum.

Does anyone have any info or experience with the Momentus XT and Diskeeper Hyper Fast? Will the software make a differerence or is it not at all compatible with the drive?

Hello,

Diskeeper 2011 with HyperFast is designed to optimize typical SSD drives. The Momentus XT, although it utilizes flash NAND memory, will not be compatible with the HyperFast technology.

However, you can still use the standard automatic defragmentation and Intelliwrite functions on the Momentus XT and simply treat it as a standard physical HDD. In testing, there have been no issues reported and the performance gains and degradation prevention are still in line with standard HDD's.

Re: Momentus XT and Diskeeper 2011 Pro with HyperFast

My concern is if the background defragmentation would erode too much of the cached data inside the drive (by it caching the sectors the defragmentation is reading) vs caching the real applications I want it to cache.

Re: Momentus XT and Diskeeper 2011 Pro with HyperFast

The answer here is pretty definitive.

Defraggers are NOT compatible with SSDs and Hybrids.

Especially background defraggers.

Having said that --- I did try to defrag my XT once --- and found that the performance deterioated a bit until it relearned the proper cache content.

That was a period of about a week or 2 of regular use.

Technically, the problem you have is the Momentus XT SSD Cache alogrithium need to be disabled during defragmentation of the rotating / physical disk (as opposed to the Flash cache).

Post optimization, the alogrithium, including the learned routines, need to be re-activated.

There will then be additional changes, as the flash cache content will need some adjustment now that content on the drive has move around for faster physical access (and alter the calculus of what ought to be stored in the flash cache).

Seagate... are you listening?
