Hi Jeff,
May I suggest upgrading to 8GB of RAM first? A 2 x 4GB kit can cost $70.-$90.
I did just notice this: http://www.macworld.com/article/158165/2011/02/mom
I too would like to try an XT with my MacBook Pro, but successfully. For now I've gone with a high performance "black" drive. And with a second MacBook Pro, I'll be testing an ExpressCard/34 slot with a 48G SSD via PCI for a startup drive.
A stable, reliable, Momentus XT drive would be preferable. Maybe Seagate will score with ver.2; solid drivers and 8G of SSD.

Don't take the chance. Return while you can! I am fighting with 2 drives, and I don't have an return option ![]()

Dear Mr. STX_NB
How should customers not able to wait for the SD25 firmware (still 4 weeks away?) go about returning the drive and getting a refund? Crashes 3-6 times a day is not acceptable. ![]()
Also we have no garantee that SD25 will fix our issues...
Issues I'm facing with 2 Momentus XT's (500GB) (ST95005620AS)

Not sure about the memory upgrade, I've got enough trouble trying to get this drive to work. I've installed it and restored from a time machine backup which appears to have worked but the MBP won't boot from it. I just get the apple logo and the spinny thing for ages. I've taken it out and checked that it's readable from another machine via a SATA docking station and it all looks good but it still won't boot. I tried a second restore from the same time machine backup, same result. I'm now trying a third restore from my offsite time machine backup to see if that works.
If not, I guess it might have to go back unless anyone has any other ideas?

UPDATE: Managed to do a Time Machine restore to the momentus XT from my offsite backup and the MBP rebooted properly this time (though I'm a little suspicious as the restore finished at about 89% but maybe that's just OSX being odd), took me a few hours but phew! Seems OK so far and I can put the machine to sleep. Firmware is SD23 and I'll probably update to SD24 once it's bedded in for a while.
Haven't heard any strange noises or had any beachball spininess so far but it's early days, fingers crossed! ALso hope all you other folks get things sorted out soon and Seagate come up with the goods to fix these OSX related issues.

Well, Windows 7 x64 related issues with SD24 as well, see my post earlier in this same thread about 2 ThinkPad T61p laptops with similar issues (BSODs being the most frustrating).

We're working on it as fast as possible. Can you send the moderator your contact info. Let's see if we can't get your drive in house for analysis.
Thanks,
J
Hi STX_NB,
I sent a private message to the moderator with my personal email a week ago, no one got back to me.

Hi,
[My configuration info is below] My drive, which I purchased from Amazon in December, came with SD23 and very soon after installing I noticed that it would occasionally spin down (and therefore "pause" the system) while I was web browsing in Safari or Firefox. I noticed it most often when browsing Facebook but that may just be because I do that the most. The spin down during web browsing always happened when a page was loading, not any other time. I also found that sometimes when I closed the lid of my laptop to put the computer to sleep, it would go to sleep and within 5-15 seconds I would hear the computer wake up and the HD spin up. If left alone, it would go back to sleep on it's own between 15-30 seconds. I had one experience of the battery dying overnight, possibly due to it self-waking and not returning to sleep. I have since installed SD24 and have had at least one instance of each of the symptoms above, but far less regularly - a step in the right direction!!
Additional notes:
- I'm almost always plugged into AC power, but I think I've noticed symptoms on both AC and battery.
- I currently have Time Machine running (via WiFi), but noticed symptoms prior to turning it on.
- I use a cooling pad that plugs into a USB port, but noticed symptoms with & without it and never have it in when I put it to sleep. Other than that I have no devices attached to the computer.
- The only background utility I have running is Little Snitch network monitor (not the filter) which I had prior to installing my Momentus XT and before the symptoms appeared.
- I have never heard any "beeps" or other unusual sounds from this drive (though I am familiar with what that sounds like).
- Next time a symptom occurs, I will immediately look in the Console for any relevant information and post it for you.
CONFIGURATION:
- Momentus XT 500GB (SD23 -> SD24)
- 15" MacBook Pro 2.4Ghz (Mid/Late 2007) Model A1226
- 8GB RAM
- Mac OS X 10.6.5 (upgraded to 10.6.6 after SD24 update)
- Advanced/Power user of Macs for many years

Wow! Spoke way too soon. Shortly after my last post I shut the MBP down and it wouldn't reboot at all, just got a grey screen, no Apple icon or spinny thing. Had to reboot from teh OSX DVD and tried a disk repair which failed with "invalid node structure. Rebuilding catalog B tree" and then declared a bit later on that it couldn't repair the dirve at all.
So this time I did a clean OSX reinstall and then restored all my files and apps from a fresh Time Machine backup which I'd taken after I'd got the Momentus working. and it's up and running again now but only after another few hours of work and waiting for data to copy across. I wonder how long it will last this time? If it fails again I'll definitley return the disk and look for an alternative 500GB drive for my machine. This is my second bad experience with Seagate drives this month as one of my 3 month old 2 TB NAS drives failed earlier this month. I suspect I won't be buying Seagate drives in future.
