Re: SD24 Didn’t Fix Your Issues?

Hi Aleksanerkk,

Seagate isn't going to leave you guys.   We have new code being tested by forum users now.  So far we've some good improvements but we're waiting for a few more people to use the drive a bit more.

I had hoped enough folks had tested it by now but I think we'll give the code on systems one more week before we post.

Hold tight just a little bit longer for us.  We just want to make sure.

Any news on the spin down and battery issue besides from Kris' comment?  Mine works fine except for the battery life issue.

Re: SD24 Didn’t Fix Your Issues?

A couple of things.  Early on we turned off APM on the drive because many users wanted the performance from the drive more than the power savings.  But users still had the capability of using their OS power managment to force the drive to spin down and help with power savings.  Some users have this working flawlessly and I've been asking them to send their setting of how they have this working so that we can send out instructions to you guys.  If it's not settings then there is a conflict between the command certain versions of the OS is sending the drive and the drives ability to accept the command.   If you haven't already tried adjusting your power management function/tools with Apple OS can you give that a shot and tell us what you find?

Thanks,

j

Re: SD24 Didn’t Fix Your Issues?

Hmmm, I have tried every configuration with the Apple APM but it did not seem to help what so ever.  I have a macbook pro 2,2, 2.33 mhz with OSX 10.6.6.   Before I used to get close to 3.5 hrs with a WD 200 GB 7200 rpm but now it is only around 1.5 hrs.  Love the speed but just annoys me that I have to constantly plugin after an hour.  I am using SD24 on a 500 GB XT.

on the spin down issue,

When i leave the laptop (fully charged) for a while and come back the battery now states 8-9 hours, !!! I have not seen that for quite some time! keep in mind I have to make sure it's running on intel gfx by quitting skype and chrome. This is good news. :smileyhappy:

SD25 FTW

ps. still no crashes...

Spindown on sleep (close lid on macbook pro)

it takes 22 seconds for the harddrive to spindown when i close my macbook pro. this seams quite long. Can someone confirm that this is indeed shorter without the Momentus XT installed?

Re: SD24 Didn’t Fix Your Issues?

I installed the new drive with SD25 cloning my bad drive two days ago.

Until now I haven't experienced any freeze, power consumption returned to normal behaviour and the speed increased.

Also when I close the lid, the drive spins down in around 5-10 seconds.

I stressed the drive a lot, with big downloads, copying and unpacking of big files, virtual machines...

Re: SD24 Didn’t Fix Your Issues?

can you send me a link for the SD25 beta firmware?

like to test on my 2011 MBP 8.3 and Sony Viao Z?

So far the Sony Viao Z with SD24 running ok, but battery seems die pretty quick.

MBP with SD23 seems freeze quite offen and making beeping sound.

Re: SD24 Didn’t Fix Your Issues?

I will repost with some stats & a spreadsheet here, but I'd like to share my experiences as they've changed since my last post.

SD25 has seemed to improve boot times & I haven't had a freeze since the upgrade. It's only been about a week, but fingers crossed.

I also think the no-power-down issue is either addressed with SD25 or with 10.6.7 as I took the interval down to 1min, ran activity monitor to ensure there were no disk accesses and when there were not (and after i killed the processes that were), the disk behaved as expected.

I am getting better battery life, too, but I'm not a hugely mobile user, so I don't have much to judge it against.

I'll come back and repost two test results: a regular 7200 rpm disk vs SD25 in boot times (an area I had a complaint about)  and battery life. On both of these, I have anecdotal evidence to say things are much improved, but I'm not exactly able to quantify it yet. I'll get out the benchmarking tools and come back with some numbers for the scientists/geeks around here.
