Seagate Momentus XT SSHD compatible w/ Intel HM55 Express Chipset?

I have an HP Pavilion DV7 CTO 4000 laptop, here are the details:

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c02666747.pdf

My hard drive is failing (SMART imminent failure) and I was eyeing the Seagate Momentus XT SSHD to replace it (either the 500 GB or the 750 GB model), here are the details:

http://www.seagate.com/docs/pdf/datasheet/disc/ds_momentus_xt_retail.pdf

The PDF of my laptop (pg. 4) shows a list of HDD configurations and I'm wondering whether I'm limited to those configurations and would have to order a replacement HDD from HP. I also see that the chipset I have is the Intel HM55 Express Chipset and see that it supports SATA 3 GB/s, which is what the Seagate SSHD is able to support (the newer Momentus XT model is 6 GB/s but is backwards compatible to 3 GB/s).

So if anyone can shed light on whether I can replace my HDD with this one please let me know.

Thanks,
Richard

I can't see why not, the XT does it's own thing rather than relying on a MB function, it will only run at 3GB/s though as you are limited to sata 2, and the XT's are designed for laptops anyway so I don't see any problems other than what you will do with the extra battery life and faster booting.

Thanks, the Momentus XT will arrive this Friday. I really hope it works.

So I guess the HDD configurations on the manual PDF of my laptop are HP's ploy to get me to buy from them, ha!

I will let you know how it goes.

Re: Seagate Momentus XT SSHD compatible w/ Intel HM55 Express Chipset?

So the new Seagate Momentus XT came in yesterday and I just installed it, with some weird quirk though.

The first time I plugged it in and turned on the laptop it said that there was no boot device detected, uh oh. I panicked for a moment. Then I unplugged it, unplugged the power cable from the drive and from the mobo. Then I plugged it back to the mobo and back to the hard drive. I turned on the laptop again and it detected it this time! Phew!

Now it's installing Windows 7.

Re: Seagate Momentus XT SSHD compatible w/ Intel HM55 Express Chipset?

Hie,

I'm from France, i've bought a Momentus XT 750 Hybrid 2,5 inch and installed it easily in a Asus G73JH-BST7 (chipset intel HM55). Unfortunately when i don't use it for about 1hour and come back the pc had restarted with the message "your pc has unatendly restart.".The system is really clean: just the os and drivers. I've try differents setting of the power manager from "battery saving" to "high performance" or "custom". I've searched drivers for Intel HM55, install them or uninstall them...unsucessfully.

I was happy to find a specific firmware for the Momentus XT in Seagate official site but unfortunately this app seems to be releaded for 250go et 500 Go drive only...and an error occurs during installation.

so, would you know a firmware or a answer about tihd problem???

Thanks a lot.

Patrick.

There is no known firmware issue with your setup.

Try a fresh clean install of OS from manufactuers disks, and update all drivers.

Should be fine.

Could also be Windows updating if you set it to auto re-boot, or something is causing a bsod, you can uncheck auto restart in control panel options to stop that, so at least you'll see when it bsod'd, personally I'd do what Wise said and have a clean install.

Yea, so the the SSHD has been working great.

I'm sorry that you're not having good results on your set up, I don't have the answer.

Re: Seagate Momentus XT SSHD compatible w/ Intel HM55 Express Chipset?

So, now that my SSHD is set up and working awesomely, there is only one issue I'm seeing. Every time I unplug the power cord and attempt to run the laptop on battery, the performance shows a significant decrease.

I've tried to mess around with the Power Options, but it doesn't do anything.

Could it be that the battery just isn't strong enough to run the SSHD to its full potential or is there some setting or tweak that I may not know of?

Did you install in AHCi mode?

It could be a dying battery tbh, they don't last forever but that would depend on how old the machine is and how you use it, it used to be recommended to exhaust the battery and then full charge, but Toyota make the Prius so it can't discharge the battery completely which suggests that exhausting it kills it early.
