Self-Encrypted hard drives available NOWHERE (out of stock)

[ Edited ]

I am desperately trying to buy some self-encrypted hard drives (SED) from Seagate such as st9500421as.

But it is impossible to find anywhere!

I've tried all usual resellers such as Amazon (USA, UK, France, ...). I've also tried some specialzed resellers in the US or in Europe (where I live) and nobody has one in stock. Out of stock everywhere.

It is a pain to read so many articles about that "great" technology, and seeing all those reviews on the web for a product that you cannot buy.

Moreover, it is such a critical feature, I don't understand nobody talks about it as it should be the first requirement of any serious business. Data encryption is not an option.

I've also tried to ask Segate support for a reseller but, as often, I got a semi-robotic answer filled with non-sense.

So, does soembody know how to buy??

Is it due to the floodings in Asia?

Quite interesting to see all those commercial companies in the world complaining about "the financial crisis" and about their profits going down, but at the same time they lack so much efficiency when it comes to "just" sell something.

Re: Self-Encrypted hard drives available NOWHERE (out of stock)

Yes indeed. Thanks for the proposals. But in those links, most of them are "out of stock" or sent only in the US, or not really up to date.

It seems that span.com (that I already checked a few weeks ago) just changed its status from out of stock to "Available in 28 days". I don't know whether 28 days is a serious estimation. I'll check with them.

Anyway, I finally found an alternative with SOFTWARE BASED encryption. Instead of hardware based. At first I only wanted an encrypted hard drive because I had read so much about its advantages. But as it is so difficult to find one to buy, I started to search for software solutions more in depth.

I like the open source TrueCrypt. The main argument that conviced me is about BACK DOORS. It seems obvious that it is less likely to be backdoors in an opensource product than a proprietry product such as a hard drive.

Moreover, thanks to software solutions, I can choose among all HD brands, instead of the limitations of Self Encrypted hard drives on the market.

So, I'll keep an eye on SED's, but for now I'll use software and my favourite HD brand, in order to be immediately productive.

Seagate, Toshiba and Hitachi are the only brands I've found to make SED. And they all have a very poor way to market them, and very bad communication.

The drives are subject to export control.
