Hi,

I've been having a problem with my laptop running in slow motion recently. It begins with the bootup taking an extra long time and from there the windows minimize and maxmize in slow motion and games run in slow motion.

I learned that this could be the result of a faulty hard drive. I ran a disk check and it reported that:

CHKDSK discovered free space marked as allocated in the
master file table (MFT) bitmap.
CHKDSK discovered free space marked as allocated in the volume bitmap.
Windows has made corrections to the file system.

I have a ST9500423AS 7200 rpm 500 gb sata hard drive. I was wondering what I could do to verify if my drive is function properly, it's only a few months old however. It waas suggested that I go to the manufacturer's website and run a diagnostic tool but I can't seem to find it. Can someone point me in the right direction please.

Hi again,

I actually found the diagnostics tool and ran it. I just have one question, I ran the fix all long scan and the only output I recieved was pass. More specifically it said "Congratulations, your Seagate product has passed an important diagnostic test.". Does that mean my hard drive is functioning properly? I wanted to add that I ran the SeaTools for Windows version. I also ran a SMART check which passed but only took about 1 sec, is that normal?

A SMART check involves reading a handful of sectors from the drive's reserved System Area. SeaTools' SMART check is a pass-or-fail SMART test, so it isn't a very good indicator of your HDD's health.

Instead, try a more comprehensive SMART diagnostic. Look for reallocated, pending, or uncorrectable sectors.
