I just installed an XT 750 in my MacBook Pro 17" and increased my memory from 4 GB to 8 GB. The boot speed and the speed of accessing programs has increased greatly. However, download and install speeds from the internet are very slow. Also, installing programs from a a CD are very slow. I had to reinstall my Adobe Creative Suite (photoshop, dreamweaver, etc.) and it took about an hour to install. Any Ideas?

A momentus XT drive shouldn't really do this unless there's some defect. They're ususally really good. I'd return it and get a replacement if I were you.
I guess you can also try disk utility repair and disk warrior??

I restored from time machine. used the recover hd on time machine. I have double checked ribbons and cables and they seem to be okay. everything else runs pretty fast, just the downloads are slow and the installs are slow.

I recently bought a 500G version, and replaced it with the original Hitachi 320G HDD and also updated to 8GB memory, it perferms very well. Mac OS X 10.7.4 boot time and apps boot time are all very good.
You need to do a fresh install of Lion, and then recover your data via time machine, and last thing you need to do is press OPTION+COMMAND+P+R and press power button to restart your computer. (Reset PRAM http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379 is important when you change your Mac's hardware)

if your recovery from time machine worked well, I don't see that there is anything wrong with installation on your XT. After all this also can be seen as some sort of installation. Adobe installations may take long. Especially if it is pro software. When I install ProTools on my machine it may also take a long time.
That you internet connection is slow is not normal but it might be due to your internet connection rather than anything else. Check your network speed, restart the modem and router. If you use a network drive, delete the drive from your finder and connect again. Do so with all USB and network connections. Check your firewall, are the internet programs still allowed to connect to the internet?
After you reset your PRAM you can also reset your smc. http://goo.gl/Kc2Lk
Normally everything should go fine when you use Carbon Copy Cloner on a Mac. Despise all the good intended words from some ppl on this forum not to use that kind of way. That may be true on a windows machine but on a mac you can. And when in trouble simply do a re-install of your system from the recovery drive.
And remember the XT drive is not so fast in writing as it is in reading....!
And one more thing: Spotlight may start to work on your drive, Time Machine does and perhaps some virus protection too. This can keep your mac slow for a considerable amount of time. If you have virus protection, make sure it does not check the time machine ! Cause if time machine backs up all the processes will be checked by the virus protection.©2012 Seagate Technology LLC
