I have had similar problems to many people with this drive and with Seagate support having no interest in identifying the cause. Putting everything down to to machine its connected to and stating it drive is behaving as expected.
The problem I have had is that the drive goes into a sleep (or crashed state) and never returns from it. Unless you power cycle the drive. This happens on a fairly frequent basis (perhaps once a week on a machine that is on 24x7). I have never had any similar problems with other drives connected to the same machine.
I suspect its a problem with the USB caddy rather than the drive itself but i have been very disappointed by both the drive and Seagate support and will avoid seagate where possible in the future.
