2TB Hard Drive Beeping

Two days agao my 2TB external hard drive started beeping. Once every three seconds. Started doing this after i transported it to a different location and tried to use it again. The beeping beings immediately after plugging in the power source, the green light on the front turns on and stays on, computer does not recognize that a drive has been plugged in however.

Re: 2TB Hard Drive Beeping

Beeping is an indicator of low power. Please check the following:

- Re-seat (disconnect and re-connect) the USB cable at both ends

If the drive has an external power supply, plug the power supply directly into the wall instead of a power strip. Power strips can fluctuate power by more than 5% (maximum allowed variance for our drives). It may help to test the drive using a different power supply (if you have another with the exact same power output as the original)
If this drive does not have an external power supply, try the drive on a different main USB data port (not through any hubs). Try the drive on a different data cable if possible.
Check this article as it can have a huge impact on power output on the USB port on Windows-based systems:

Re: 2TB Hard Drive Beeping

Assuming you have eliminated a power problem, it could be that your drive is suffering from stiction (heads stuck to platters), or a seized spindle motor.

Re: 2TB Hard Drive Beeping

Hi

I have 8 seagate expansion hdd ranging from 1.5T to 2T. I started buying in Feb 2010. I just lost the third one a few days ago.

actually one is still just clicking away. but i also think one of the other (a fourth is clicking... im scared to turn on) Ive transferred as much as i could before the first one just died... i/o failure???

the second is clicking, and now the third just beeps. i checked.. warranty just died. someone posted.. change power supplies..

did that... with all the others... nada... some techie said to break the cover and install into computer... ok broke case carefully and plugged in.  i thought the beeping was coming from the control section but i put the hdd to my ear and its coming from that.

No spinning... nothing...

oh my gosh... please, please, someone tell me that there's some way of fixing this... this WAS the backup of the backup. I mean how many backups do you have to do?

Like i said earlier... i lost lots from the other with the i/o fail, and ive backup the click of death one, but this one is priceless, please say there is something, i can do!

I've tried everything... going into bios, using external usb troubleshooting gadget.... nothing

thanking in advance.

I'm very sorry to hear about your hard drive issues.

Unfortunately at this point you'll need to contact a data recovery service to retrieve your data. You can choose from local ones, check online or contact our data recovery service:

Re: 2TB Hard Drive Beeping

i have two seagate external hard drives. a 1tb hdd and 2tb hdd. up until this week, they have perfectly fine in multiple geographies over the last 3 and 2 years respectively.

my 1 tb hdd is still functioning as normal (so far), but the 2tb hdd has started producing a beeping sound before stopping and doing nothing further.

like others in this thread, the beeping sound emits for not more than 2mins, then stops. sometimes the hdd will even spin for a few seconds and then stop. the computer does not recognise the hdd at all. i dont know what to do, i have tried replacing the power supply from different outlets in the house, but no success.

i dont really want to open up the hdd, as im not really a tech person. however if its a straightforward fix, i will.
