Hello,
I tried to use my Seagate Expansion 2.0 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive about 15 minutes ago. When I plugged in the power cord (I usually take it out after ejecting) it sounded as if it was about to start up (that gradual whirring) for about half a second, and then a BEEP (only one time), and then it whirs up again but shorter this time, then silent pause, whirs up (same whir as the second time), etc. etc. and keeps continuing these shorter whirs. The little light is on and solid (no flashing). The drive does not show up in My Computer.
This is the first time it had ever happened, so I'm somewhat anxious. I haven't had any major problems with it so far since I got this hard drive.
There is about 150 GB of stuff on it and I've had it for just under a year (got it in December last year) so warranty is still valid (1 year limited warranty, ordered from Amazon). The model number is ST320005EXA101-RK.
Any clue as to what the heck is going on would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like the power cord might be bad.
Plug the USB cable into another USB port, and replace the power cable with one that has the same specifications:

Let me know how that works out for you.

Thanks for the suggestion. Do you know if I could get this type of power cable from other electronics (i.e. from a router, printer, laptop, etc.) or whether I should buy a new power adapter? It outputs 12V DC 750mA.
Also, your avatar is a bit too big, and it covers up some of your post. Just a heads up.

I don't know if any of your other devices would have the same specs, since there are so many different types available.
You could check the labels on those and find out ![]()
Also, thank you for letting me know about my Avatar being gigantic, I'll investigate and see what's going on with that.

Thanks. At first I used a Surfboard modem cable which fit into the plug, same voltage but higher amperage. The hard drive functioned, so I bought a power cable from Amazon which was 12V 1.5A, and my old power cable for it was 12V 0.75A which should be fine. Now it's working. Many thanks ![]()
Your avatar turned big again by the way (not sure what's going on there)
