3 Tb Seagate Expansion Drive (P/N 9SEAN3-500) not regconized

I got this drive last month and it work like a charm until recently, while my brother trying to open a video file on it, the drive stopped working and make his computer freezed.

After that, non computer in my possesion can regconized the drive anymore (4 laptops and 3 PCs).

Even though my Drive still under warranty, I opened it and get the drive out, pluged it to my PC it the PC regconized the Drive.

However the drive has been seen as three partition. I didn't do anything so it should be only one partition instead of three like this.

The first partition is in RAW and about 350Gb, the Second is 1650Gb which is unallocated and the third is 750Gb unallocated too.

Is there anyway for me to get my data back from this drive? I saved 1.8Tb data combined of Software, HD Video and my company Data so I can't afford to loose all of them like this.

Look into some data recovery software...it should be able to scan the drive and recover the files for you.

You can always try the free trial of the DIY software seagate offers just to see if anything can be pulled from the drive...

To all users: If your data is stored ONLY on an external hard drive, then it is NOT a backup. A BACKUP is having the data stored in TWO or MORE locations. If it is only in ONE location, you don't have a backup at all. If the data is important to you, then have it stored in multiple locations to prevent data loss.

Re: 3 Tb Seagate Expansion Drive (P/N 9SEAN3-500) not regconized

I am having exactly the same issue with my 3 week old external drive, it is definitely a fault with the sata-usb adapter.  However DO NOT format it or stuff around with recovery, for some stupid reason, the drive can ONLY be read using the seagate enclosure it came with.... so try plugging it into something that isnt windows based and you should be able to read it.

I was able to connect mine to my android tablet, and i can read it using the seagate enclosure, BUT it WILL NOT work on any windows machine i try.

It would be nice if seagate would comment on this, or give us some sort of fix, so that we can actually use our expensive drives for longer then a month....

Re: 3 Tb Seagate Expansion Drive (P/N 9SEAN3-500) not regconized

Just to add to this, the drive IS usable in Windows XP.............. I have no idea why, must be something to do with the way that Windows 7 looks at the drive, that stops it from connecting properly.

This is definitely NOT a driver issue, as i have tried the drive on 5 different Windows 7 builds.

As soon as i can get my data off this drive using Windows XP, I will be putting it away and never using it again......... Should have stuck with WD from the start....

Your support is disgusting Seagate.

Re: 3 Tb Seagate Expansion Drive (P/N 9SEAN3-500) not regconized

And before anyone decides to jump in and ask stupid questions, in an attempt to defend seagate, i have done some testing to narrow down the problem to being the drive itself and not any computer.

For 3 weeks my drive has worked on my personal windows 7 system, nothing has changed on the system at all over those 3 weeks, the drive just stopped working.

I tested the drive on multiple windows 7 systems, both laptops and desktops, usb 2 + 3, same issue.

I tested the drive on a windows xp system, it works.

I formatted and installed Windows XP to my personal system, the drive works on this setup.

Exactly the same system, formatted, installed Windows 7 again, drive does not work...

Thumps up seagate.... you used to have a name that was known for quality..

Re: 3 Tb Seagate Expansion Drive (P/N 9SEAN3-500) not regconized

I have the exact same drive and it just wont be recognized by windows 7 anymore. it first began to take forever to re recognized by windows and it would take a LONG TIME to open folders. Now it wont open at all.I ran the segate tools Long generic test and it passed. HOwever that test took almost 24hours to complete. I dont think that amount of time is normal. I just want to extract my data and return the drive and get my money back. I have been trying hard to get the drive to open up again but nothing i do helps. im so dissapointed. I have had previous seagate drives, even a  6 year old freeagent drive that works perfect still. But seagate is doing a piss poor job on these 3TB expansion drives. im finding there are many poeple with our similar problem. If anybody has a solution please let us know.
