500 gig drive shows only 277 gig capacity

I just purchased a 500 gig Onetouch 4 USB external HD.  I formatted it for HFS so that my Mac could write to it.  It now can, but it is listed as having a capacity of only 277 gigs.  Why is that, and how do I fix it?

I have a 2 GHz core 2 duo iMac running OS 10.4.11, with 1 gig RAM.
