APM off by default? - Expansion 2TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive

Hi all

I am thinking of buying an Expansion 2TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive but the "chirping" head park issue puts me off.

However, I read from the following user review of the 3TB version that APM is now turned off by default for external drives and the firmware is CC9E.

Can anyone who recently bought a 2TB or 3TB Expansion USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive confirm that APM is now off by default? Does this completely resolve the "chirping" problem?

I understand that the firmware on external drives cannot be updated (via USB).

Thanks in advance.

Re: APM off by default? - Expansion 2TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive

I bought a 2TB USB2.0 expansion in May It's 7200rpm, APM  is on and it chirps occasionally but not enough to worry me.

I figure the drive is under warranty and all my data is backed up so I'm happy to see how it plays out.

Not sure why "turned off by default" is an issue. Can't you just turn it off yourself with CrystalDiskInfo or HDParm?

Firmware update through USb "isn't supported"
