Backp and sync software is worse than useless

I just bought a maxtor 120gig one touch drive. The hardware seems to be fine. But the software is in my opinion worse than useless.

1) It will not backup or sync my Z drive. I store all my important data on the Z drive. The D drive on my laptop works but for some reason the software will not work on the Z drive

2) I cannot select folders in "documents and settings", except for "My documents" and "desktop". Ridiculous! I see other posts on this forum complaining about this problem.

Now I read on these forums that the software will not backup hidden files.

I have wasted a good amount of time with trying to get the syncing to work. But then was amazed (in a very bad way) that that backup of all my important data on the z drive does not occur. Unreliable backup software is a serious problem imo. I am a very disappointed customer.

Try what I have been using for 3 years.  Free shareware called Freebyte.com
I work at a school and backup my W: and X: and Y: folders
That's the Teachers, Admin and Student drives.
With that software you create 3 profiles and initially create 3 folders on the Mini 4.
The copy the enitre folder into that specific folder.
I use the Mini 4 password protection.  No one will get into that HD.
Along with my new RAID 3 and backup tape at school, this mini come home with me every night.
Should anything happen at school, I can access everything with the right programs.
Darn program is fast. Some 22K file are checked and a hundred added in 3 - 5 min.
My older 40 Gb mini saved my rear as a week before school ended my tired NT 4.0 server with 1 SCSI died with a corrupt SAM.
My mini was attached to the 7 secretaries PCs and a copy of their entire folder was dumped on their HD.
In an hour my secretaries were working again.  Had to wait for 4 weeks until a new RAID server was ordered and installed.
Maxtor Mini 4 saved the day !  Also my Freebyte.
I use it at home with XP and Vista Business.

Thanks a lot Freebyte Backups seems to be all I need! And its stores the backup'ed files in a standard windows format so I can easily access them from another machine. Seems to be perfect for my needs. KISS rules (Keep it simple stupid)

Now to delete all the maxtrox software!:smileyhappy:

Yes. It's a very simple program but powerful.  That's the way it should be. Browse, click, done.  Plus it's very fast.  I check some 60K files at home with the Maxtor in 10 min.  If you have a problem with the Maxtor, as I did with corrupt folder, you will get an error about files not able to copy.  You can view them at the end of the backup and figure out what's up.
If you unhide any E-mail folders, it can backup your E-mail too (Outlook Express or Thunderbird).  Then you can hide them once they are listed.  The Thunderbird E-mail really taxes the system, but it keeps the messages in huge files.  So you may thing it's stalled, but its copying them.
Its easy to create a secondary safety backups with another drive.  If it happend to be the same letter when you plug it in (mine happens to be F:smileyhappy: then just run it and it copies the same files to a secondary backup. If not, just choose the "Output location" and save that as a different profile. Unplug it and keep that copy outside of your house/apartment.  I do that with a Maxtor mini and keep it in my car.  The mini can be password protected if needed.
