Re: Backup Software Does Not See All Folders

Michael, Have you tried using the older software with the new drive? What version are you using that worked?

Re: Backup Software Does Not See All Folders

Seagate/Maxtor NEEDS to fix this or replace this with a product that provides complete backup capability.

Re: Backup Software Does Not See All Folders

Boy am I stupid. I just decided to look at the online manual: 3. Can I back up my entire system using the OneTouch 4's Backup feature? No. The Backup feature is designed to back up your data (documents, pictures, music, videos, etc.). The Backup feature cannot back up your entire computer. Windows OneTouch 4 Plus and OneTouch 4 Mini users can use SafetyDrill to back up their Maxtor OneTouch IV 100 computers. (SafetyDrill is not available on the Macintosh.) OneTouch 4 users can use a third-party or Operating System (Vista Business or Vista Ultimate) backup solution

Re: Backup Software Does Not See All Folders - use other software??

From the postings to this forum, it appears that many of us bought a Maxtor OneTouch4 because we got sucked into believing that with "One Touch" we could actually back-up our computers. How silly we were! Instead, with one touch we can back only what Seagate deems we "should" want to back up - something far from our entire computer. Apparently their old Maxtor software will do what we want. s I understand it, it is not a defect of the hardware - it is a fine 500 gb drive - it is the defect of the OneTouch button software. So - what would be the problem with disregarding the supplied backup software and use some other program which would back-up automatically to the OneTouch hard drive? I have gone out and purchased Norton's Ghost 12 and plan to use it to copy an image of my entire computer directly to the Maxtor. Of course, I must do this manually and I doubt it can be done automatically with the OneTouch button. Another option is group rebellion - does anyone have a copy of the older OneTouch software that could be distributed for free to interested and dissatisfied Maxtor OneTouch 4 recent purchasers? Just a thought - Peter

Re: Backup Software Does Not See All Folders - use other software??

Customer support said they would email me a link where I could get the older software within 24 hours. That was Wednesday and nothing yet.

Re: Backup Software Does Not See All Folders

Boy am I ever gullable!!.  I also bought this product thinking I was going to be able to backup my entire C drive.  I was shocked to see it has Very limited capability and as much as I tried to trick it by moving various files to My Documents it ignored copying them.  If anyone finds a link to the old software or some other product I can use to copy my entire C to my Onetouch 4 mini PLEASE let me know.

Re: Backup Software Does Not See All Folders

A word of clarification to my previous email.  I want to be able to copy certain portions of my C drive (e.g. some programs, emails, and etc)  that is not supported by current software.  I believe one can copy the entire C drive by using the Safety feature.

Re: Backup Software Does Not See All Folders

You know... You can use xp backup or a different backup software just as easily.
Backup = Having data in more than one place.

Re: Backup Software Does Not See All Folders

The key thing in this exchange during the chat session may be:

Agent: it is made to backup data, no system files, program files, hidden files, or files that are in use

I do not use that software for backup, so this is simply a guess.

There's probably some version of the software or will be someday, perhaps an extra-option, that would allow backing up open files and it's not included with the "free software" provided with the drive.

Would it not be possible to change the .PST file attribute so that it's no longer a hidden file?

In a domain-controller environment, would it not be possible to run the backup as backup, the privileged login entity designed for this purpose?  Perhaps even use run as ... in a script?  For this to work you might need to make sure all users are out of the mail program (the system may still have it "open" or "in use").  A script might be constructed that caused a backup-to-disk at the application level, then systematically renamed the resulting file to something recognizable to you and the backup software working as it normally does, but not recognizable to the email software.
