Barracuda 7200.9

Windows 7.

My computer is no longer recognizing my external hard drive (Barracuda).  When I look in Device Manager it lists the drive as "mass storage" but says it "will not start"

I have plugged the Barracuda (usb) into several usb ports.  They all work with other things plugged in...but none will recognize the Barracuda.

I don't know if there's a driver I can download?  Can't find this info anywhere on Seagate.  I found one paragraph that said the drive shouldn't need a driver from Seagate.  ???

I downloaded recovery software but it only recognizes my main C drive inside my computer.

An odd thing to add.... I actually have TWO external drives.... the other is an IBook....and my computer is no longer recognizing this drive either!    The non-recognition of the two drives happened within days of each other.  Krazy.

Any suggestions?

thanks in advance

Re: Barracuda 7200.9

Hello,

I would recommend trying the drive on another computer to try and isolate the issue. That will let you know if the issue is with the drive or if the problem is computer related. The drivers are built into the Operating System, so there is not a download. If this is an internal drive that you have put in a third party external enclosure, you may also want to try and connect the drive internally to a computer if possible.

Let us know if you have any other questions.

Re: Barracuda 7200.9

thanks for reply.

I plugged external Barracuda into another computer and it was not recognized.

I can hear ticking inside the drive.

I open the casing (it's out of warranty already) and I don't see how I can connect it "internally" as you suggested.   The only detachable wiring is the power supply plug (4 prongs).  I don't see any kind of cable plugged into the drive that I could use to attach the drive internally to a computer.  ??

Hope there's some help out there.   I need to retrieve my backup files.  I realize there are retrieval services but I don't have the bucks to do that right now.

Thanks
