Can I just delete all files from Maxtor OneTouch III 80G and use as a portable drive?

I want to use it as a portable drive, rather than a backup device. I don't imagine using backup or syncing software, so can I just delete it?

If I install it, does it remove all those files from the external disk anyway? Do I get the whole disk to play with, or do I have to leave some files in place?

Can I just install the software later if I decide I want to use the OneTouch button? Are there any other good uses for it other than backups or syncing?

Yes you can delete everything off it if you want.  It will work fine as a portable drive.  I have a drive similar to this and I just use it like that, no special software.
Seagate has the files available for re-download from their Download page on this website.

Is there anyway that I can do BOTH a portable drive AND a backup?  I have plenty of room, but am limited.

Thanks.
