Hello all.
I've got a 500GB Maxtor Basic externel drive which was working fine up until about a week ago. Now at some
point my computer restarted while the drive was connected via USB and then windows vista launched it's Checkdsk during
boot up and said that my drive needs to be checked for consistency. next thing during the check it got stuck saying
somthing like "inserting at $25 index" over and over.
I had to reset the computer and now the green light on the drive is
constantly flashing, the dirve is recognized in windows but without it's normal icon (the black Maxtor icon) and trying to access it results in an error messege saying "G:\ is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable". Tried to use te drive on a diffrent computer with XP and there i can access the drive but none of the files or directories is visible (although XP does says that 98 GB out of 465GB are free).
I had like 400 gigs of data backed on that drive and I really don't want to have to format the drive without having a way to restore it first. Can anyone help me or point me to right direction? i've tried everything i can think of but nothing seems to work.
Thanks.

put it on that 2nd pc and use a data recovery software to get the data back
then run a diagnostic, like seatools for windows, long test
if it passes, reformat.
make sure ALWAYS keep a backup from now on
