I have a 200GB external Maxtor OneTouch II Disk harddrive which I bought possibly 4 or 6 years ago and connects via USB. This
harddrive was connect only to a Windows XP Home Edition HP desktop computer which died after a mere 6 years of use.
Sometime during my use and ownership of this external hard drive I compressed all of the files on the drive. I do not recall
really ever using the maxtor software with the drive. I probably had the software installed on the HP desktop but I know I never
attached a password for use of the drive.
So when the HP desktop died I decided to switch use of this external harddrive to my laptop, a Gateway which runs Windows Vista
but will not read the external harddrive. (I am suspecting this has nothing to do with the software which I installed on the Vista
laptop and possibly more to do with the compression of the files therein).
Under Computer Management the external drive is labeled as Disk 3. It has a red arrow pointing down, calls it Unknown, states it
is 189.92 GB and is "Not Initialized" and "Unallocated". Under Computer, the drive doesn't appear at all. However there is an icon
whether or not the drive is connected to the laptop, which states Maxtor Locked Drives. Yet I know I never gave the drive a
password and never had to enter one when I had it connected to the HP desktop computer. The drive appears under Device Manager
under Disk drives as Maxtor OneTouch II Disk
However with all its appearances in the above listed utilities I cannot access the drive's contents nor the drive itself. PLEASE
HELP what do I do? Under Device Manager's General Tab for this disk, it says that the "device is working properly", I've updated
the driver and have tried uninstalling it and disabling and no change!

I am having the same problem with the same external drive. My "dead" comptuer is a Dell of approx the same age, running Windows XP. I'd like to be able to recover the files from the Maxtor for use on my HP Pavilion laptop running Windows Vista (approx 1-1/2 yrs old). I don't want to reformat my HP -- just want to recover files. Would appreciate any help! Thanks

My computer recognizes the Maxtor and considers it operational.
