I have a 1.5tb expansion drive ( model# ST315005EXA101-RK ) I purchased in FEB of 2010 that's been clicking all this time. Sometimes it's every couple of minutes and sometimes a little longer in between clicks. It would also unmount and remount on by itself, causing my pc to freeze for a short few seconds. Like some of you I would just unplug it until I needed it to back-up.
I think I just solved my troubles by reading a lot of the messages here on the forum.
1. The unmount and remount issue I solved was by using the Seagate Manager software to change the power setting to "Never".
2. The clicking issue I first tried to lift my drive to have more airflow under the drive, this I read here a month ago, but that didn't work. I came back here to read more and someone mentioned EMI. That was my lightbulb moment. I had my drive on top of my pc. I put some distance between my pc and the drive ( 13 inches above ) and restarted my pc and the clicking didn't come back. There hasn't been a click in 3 days.
I suggest moving your drive away from any electronic devices to see what happens.
I hope this helps.
It is now DEC 14th and I believe I have solved my "clicking" problem. My drive has not had any clicking except for normal sounds during data transfers. Don't take your drive apart until you try this.
I think tech support should recommend putting distance between the drive and pc it might some people's issues.

Same problem with mine. I purchased this 1TB ExHD 2/10. It went months without making any noise. I have moved the HD away from the PC. Will monitor the problem.
I found several videos of the problem on YouTube.
