Computer Will Not Recognize Maxtor One Touch 4 Mini

Hello,

I bought this unit at a store about 9 mos. ago and never installed it.   My older computer  had to go to a computer fix-it guy about 6 mos. ago, and I had the man install it for me.     He put all my "old" e-mails onto it,  but I never really used it after that.    He put the Icon for my "old" e-mails on my Desktop and I can access them.    But, this month I want to transfer more files onto it, and I didn't know how to do it.    I asked someone yesterday and she told me the procedure.    This morning I went to do what she said,  and discovered that my computer is not recognizing this "external hard drive."   And, I don't remember that it ever did.

I don't remember that there was a software CD in the package when I bought it;  I think it was just the unit in the package.     I've spent over an hour working on this problem this morning, and I don't see a solution.    Do I need to take it back to my local, computer fix-it guy?      Or, is this a common problem that "everyone" is having a problem with?       I can try to go purchase a new cable to try.    But, I've been reading some of the messages, and it looks like a 50/50 thing whether that will help me.

Since I bought this unit at least 9 mos. ago, I cannot really return it to the store.      Does anyone know whether "Seagate" will let us return these units to the company?

P.S.    I've always been curious why the data I wanted "saved" to the "external drive"  so it wouldn't affect the memory of my older computer --  was still available on my Desktop.         (Windows XP)

Re: Computer Will Not Recognize Maxtor One Touch 4 Mini

OOPS.      I just looked at the back of my large (cluttered) desk for a different USB cable to try,  and discovered the original package for the "OneTouch."    When I looked inside the plastic packaging, I discovered the CD software was inside of it.     :smileysurprised:(     Sorry.     I'll go install this software now.

My Maxtor 4 Plus was not being recognized. I read a very simple solution elsewhere and tried it-simply swap out the USB cable for another (suce as the one for your digital camera?)--it's cranking now! Simple is good!:smileyhappy:
