Corrup file: LightningSand.CFD

Hi,

I'm new to the board so I hope I don't violate any rules.  I did a cursory search for my problem but could not find it any where.

I have a 160Gb Maxtor One Touch 4 Mini which I use to back up my data files.  It has been working without issue since I first installed it.  A couple of days ago after I turned on my pc (Dell Dimension 8400 XP SP2 with 2Gb Ram) I unlocked the Mini and immediately received this error message:

Windows - Corrupt File

The file or directory F:\System Volume Information\LightningSand.CFD is corrupt and unreadable.  Please run the chkdsk utility.

I ran the Test My Drive utility in the Settings section.  The results were normal.  Then I tried to run the chkdsk utility.  When I do that I get a message indicating that chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process.  It further indicates that chkdsk may run if the volume is dismounted first, with the warning that "all opened handles to this volume would then be invalid".

I also tried booting my pc in safe mode but then I could not access the Mini drive.  The backup function works but every time I unlock the Mini I get the error message.

Does anyone know how I can resolve this issue?

Thanks,
