Creating an Encrypted Folder - Option not available

[ Edited ]

The help file for creating an encrypted folder says to click on Security in the Command Panel, then click "Maxtor Encryption." There is no Maxtor Encryption in the list. In the list is

  • Unlock the Drive (greyed out)
  • Change Password
  • Set or delete Password Hint
  • Key Erase (greyed out)

I have already started creating folders in my maxtor drive, and filling them with files, so I was surprised to find that there was an option to create an encrypted folder. What have I missed? Was I supposed to format the drive when I got it?

Re: Creating an Encrypted Folder - Option not available

The option to create an encrypted folder is for users of Maxtor OneTouch(tm) drives and other products that use software-based encryption. These products use encryption that runs on the computer and may be coupled with a firmware-level password on the device itself. The section on encrypted folders does not apply to BlackArmor and may have been inadvertently left in by the staff.

BlackArmor drives utilize transparent encryption on the hard drive itself. This encryption is completely automatic on the hardware level once you have set up your drive password. Any files you have already created on the drive, have already been secured.

Thanks. Answered my question. What, by the way, is transparent encryption?
