I have a Maxtor Personal Storage 3200. I recently found the Master Boot Record was change altered. I ran a tool EaseUS partion recovery and it showed one Existing and a few small FAT deleted partions. The existing partion showed as Unformatted. After running the Partion recovery and hitting the proceed button after 4 days of scanning the software was not able to do anything.
I ran the SeaTools Short Generic test on the drive and it Passed. I started to run the Long Generic and after a few hours and a quarter of the drive scanned aborted the run. I just down loaded the SeaTool File Recovery and it is scanning now an says the files a in the various sectors.
Question 1: If I install a partiton for the entire drive as was the original case does anyone know if it was originally formatted as a FAT or NTFS?
Question 2: If I repartition the dive as origially sent from the factory..will a file recovery software work on the files remaining on the disk? In other words, in order for files to be recovered does the disk have to be partitioned and a new FAT built and then repopulated after the files are recovered?

One large NTFS partition http://www.seagate.com/staticfiles/maxtor/en_us/do
If you repartition it you will most likely lose your data.
You can try a Linux Rescue CD If it is just the MBR corrupted, Linux may be able to read the disk and recover your files.
