E:\ is not accessible. Access is denied.

E:\ is not accessible.  Access is denied.

Good day Ladies and Gentlemen:

This is the error message that I receive when i try to access my Maxtor One Touch 4 500GB External Hard Drive via the 'My Computor' window in Windows XP Explorer.

Initially, I installed the One Touch 4 on my desktop workstation to back up data as I was experiencing the Windows blue screen of death error message.  I sent the computor to the local repair shop for fixing.  I've got a laptop for mobile work and my wife has a laptop as well.  Both laptops meet the minimum operating requirements to run this external hard drive.  I tried installing and running the external hard drive on both laptops without success.  The hard drive would NOT install the software though it was recognized as an external drive on both laptops. In the end I had to download the One Touch 4 operating software from the Seagate website and install it locally on these laptops.  I do not know what other information I can provide to highlight my case.

Basically, I want to access the files which I backed up on the One Touch 4 and I want to know why I get this error message.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated especially from Seagate Mods.

Thank you.

I have exactly the same problem with FreeAgent Go.  Did anyone find the resolution?

I have the same problem as Biff. Arrived at in a similar manner when I went from one computer to another.

Did anyone come up with a solution?

Jan Janssen's link no longer works.

Does someone have a working link?

That link was posted when the old KB was in place, but it has been replaced.

Sorry about that, here is the new link.

Re: E:\ is not accessible. Access is denied.

Using Windows 7 and reloaded my laptop.  After the rebuild, all kinds of problems with my onetouch4 mini.  Taking ownership and replacing permissions for admins did not fix it.  After checking for errors (hours later) it stated it needed to be formated to use.  I knew the data was still there, as it parsed each file when playing with permissions.

I added the local EVERYONE group to Full Control and everything worked magically.  That simple.

Re: E:\ is not accessible. Access is denied.

Go to control panel- add or remove hardware- find maxtor manager- click on delete and another window will open up- click on repair- once it's done reboot and it should work when you try again.

Re: E:\ is not accessible. Access is denied.

You don't need any software to view/copy the files from the USB.  It's just an external drive to the PC.

Have you done a Chkdsk /f /r on the external.  If you were copying bad files to the entenal, it could have messed up the directory.  chkdsk  will try to straighten it out.   Using the /f /r will take a few hours to run, just a warning.
