uninstall the program from windows add/remove programs
dont' reboot yet
go into C: documents and settings / all users / application data / delete the maxtor folder.
reinstall the software and see how it goes
-if you didn't back up your junk, you didn't need it after your drive crashed

I had the same problem......here's what I did.
First I removed all traces of Maxtor Manager I could find. Removed from Add/remove prorams and I found 2 references in Windows Explorer. From My Computer, single click C: and from the FILE menu select EXPLORE. Expand (click on the "-" box) MY COMPUTER, then DOCUMENTS & SETTINGS, then ALL USERS, then START MENU, then PROGRAMS.
Find MAXTOR on the list and select it. From the FILE menu click DELETE.
Click the box next to DOCUMENTS & SETTINGS, and go down to PROGRAM FILES. FInd MAXTOR there and remove it.
I'm not sure any of this is really necessary, but I had already done it so that's where I started. Be very careful in Windows Explorer, because it is possible to change programs which can effect program and system performance( I guess you could use system recovery but no one wants that).
Next, from CONTROL PANEL open ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS. Open SERVICES. Scroll down to REMOVABLE STORAGE.
Mine was listed in "startup type" column as "disabled". I selected it and in the ACTION menu opened PROPERTIES. On the first tab, in the middle is "startup type". I changed it to "automatic" and clicked "apply"
I closed eveything and restarted my computer.
Then, after the computer had re-booted I plugged in my One Touch and loaded the software normally.
Everything seems to be working, but I just finished.
Hope it helps.

First, I joined this forum simply to thank you.
I was alternately near tears and/or ready to throw something trying to get my external drive to work. I've spent 2 days rebuilding my computer and this was the last, and worst, head scratcher to solve on my list. I followed your directions to the letter and everything is back to normal.
You are one of the good ones ! Thank you, thank you, thank you !!!!!
Second, a couple things I experienced that others might benefit from. Once I followed Steve's process, and began to perform a backup (keep in mind I've been using this drive for a year now, so it had plenty of files already backed up) the drive created a NEW folder. So if my OLD folder on the Maxtor drive was name 'CAT' it created a new 'CAT (1)' and proceeded to backup everything from my COMPUTER'S "my documents."
The result was I ran out of room on the external drive as it started to duplicate files already previously stored there ! I could find no way to redirect it to continue to back up files to my original 'CAT' folder.
I'm very tired so there may be a better way, but I ended up deleting all files in the Maxtor "my documents" then let the Maxtor 'backup' option run and backup my COMPUTER'S "my documents" all over again.
Success and I wish everyone else the best of luck !!

I tried and tried the suggestions here to no avail. Then I got the "Replacement Software" from Seagate.com for users who have lost or damaged the software on the OneTouch drive. The software in the drive "BIN" directory would not load in my computer, but the replacement software loaded and set up fine!
