External USB drive sometimes is powered off for no reason

I have an older 300gb USB external drive model 9y7685-560 that I've used for years as a backup drive.  All of my backups are automated and I'm so used to it running that I don't pay attention to the sound of it backing up any more.  Sometimes, for no apparent reason, the backup drive will be turned off.  I have no idea why.  If I push in the front button, it powers right back up and the backup starts running again.  I just happened to notice that it isn't powered up.  My concern is that one day I won't notice, and then I'll have a crash and no backup!  I have a HP Pavilion Laptop running Win 7 Pro on an HP xb4 docking station.  The drive is usb plugged into the docking station.  The drive and docking station are never powered off, but I shutdown the laptop every night.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks!!!!  Lee

Dang it. This happened AGAIN.  I noticed this morning that the backup drive was powered off.   I have no idea how long that it has been off.
