External hard drive doesn't show on my computer

I have a Seagate External Expansion Drive.  When I plug it in USB, the green power light comes on.  The disable safe icon in my bottom taskbar shows up.  The popup window says that the device is ready to use.  And even when I check in Device Manager, it says that my device is working properly.  But despite all of this, my drive does not show up.  I can't find it in My Computer.  It's like it isn't there.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!  I have tried this on several different comptuers, all with the same results.

Re: External hard drive doesn't show on my computer

I've run through the whole trouble shooting guide.  I even tried the Seagate Recovery Software... I installed it, then it asks which drive to scan, and my drive DOESN'T SHOW UP.... and therein lies the problem.  What do i do?  this disk has all of my photos on it.  HELP

Are you comfortable with the idea of taking the drive out of the enclosure, then connecting it internally to a computer? Should you be, you can contact our warranty department prior to doing this so you don't lose warranty coverage:

[ Edited ]

I had the exact issue, with all my photos.  Sometimes it shows on "Computer", sometimes it does not.  Device Manager finds it, as does Sea Tools.  I tried it on several computers, and again it is intermittent.  I am going to try the Seagate File Recovery tool because it is probably a bad partition.

Re: External hard drive doesn't show on my computer

I had the same problem.

Device Manager recognises the Mass USB but no recognition in 'my computer' in device manager  you can't update the driver as it says it's the most recent one.

Windows 7 updates may have installed a security update that does not allow unsigned drivers to be recognised, Seagate driver is not digitally signed so Windows 7 (not sure about Vista) blocks it.

Try plugging in your expansion drive, reboot your system, press F8 while it reboots, choose 'disable digital signature' option

My humble advice if you do this is NOT to download anything that may have a driver attached, Windows7 will not filter malicious or unrecognised drivers in this state as you have just disabled it. I would suggest you begin any downloading by rebooting your system in the normal way, download, reboot using your F8 option and move your files to your expansion drive. Messy I know but unless Seagate has a fix for this then that's what I will be doing to protect my pc.

Re: External hard drive doesn't show on my computer

I have a Seagate expansion portable device  500gb aprox 2 years old with all of my videos which I do not wish to lose. I am using windows 7 and since I've been using this my portable device has stopped working; and is not recognised by the PC driver. It keeps on asking for me to re-format my disk is there anyway way around this?
I do not wish to lose my videos as this is my back-up.

Regards.
Cheers.

Re: External hard drive doesn't show on my computer

Hello,

We would recommend that you try the drive on another computer, and make sure to try all USB ports. Also, try another USB cable to make sure there is not a cabling issue. If none of that works, then you would want to see some kind of professional data recovery service. Data is not covered under warranty, but here is a link to Seagate Data Recovery.

Let us know if you have any other questions.

Re: External hard drive doesn't show on my computer

Do not panic all your files can be recovered.

For photos, you will need any picture viewing program available. Use the Open command and voila, the drive and all your files will appear. Open the files in the program and then save them to another drive.

For videos, use a video viewer, such as VLC to accomplish the same task.

In fact every open command in every program sees the drive and its files so you can recover them by opening them and saving them to another drive. It seems only file manager cannot see the drive.

This is going to be time consuming for large numbers of files, but well worth it to save that priceless photo of Aunt Bertha stuffing her face at the Thanksgiving table <VBG>

For the techno-geeks, like me, the files can be moved using an MS-DOS window (type command.com in the run window).

Using MS-DOS commands like CD, and Copy you can move the files the old fashioned way, like we used to do before Windows.

BTW, DO NOT OPEN THE DRIVE AND TRY THE INTERNAL CONNECTION RECOMMENDED BY A PREVIOUS CONTRIBUTOR. YOU'LL BE SORRY!

I hope this saves your files.
