I bought a 500Gb Seagate external HD last week, and moved a load of stuff over to it to make room on my almost full internal drive.
When I checked a couple of days ago, hundreds of files had disappeared. Oddly, it's only the .exe files that have gone. There's not a single .exe file left, yet everything else, including the folder structure, is still there.
Scanning with a file recovery program found all the missing .exe files in a directory called:
System Volume Information\_restore{D25F204A-D3BA-4EF3-9D3A-49454
All the files have been renamed A0189997.exe, A0189998.exe etc.
As it appears that the missing files are still on the drive, is there any simple way to restore them to their correct locations with their correct names, rather than having to restore them to another drive and go through each file individually?
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

How did you move them?
I'd suggest running checkdisk on the external drive.

Thanks for your reply. I moved the files with a file manager. They were all fine when I moved them, then the .exe files disappeared a couple of days later.
I've run checkdisk and it's okay. I've also run SeaTools, and checked for viruses with 3 different programs, and everything is normal.
I've seen other posts that say their files have disappeared from Seagate external drives. One explanation was USB port overload, and removing any other USB devices and rebooting restored the files. I tried this and it didn't work.
I really am at a loss as to what to do next.

Apologies for the bump, but can anybody help me with this? At the moment I'm not using the drive because I'm wary about it deleting more stuff. Cheers.

I wish there was an answer for this question because it is my question too! I have this 1 TG box sitting here that I spent money on and I'm now afraid to use again because I put my photos on it and POOF! They're gone! NOT impressed!!! Bought this brand because it was supposed to be the best ... well, would hate to see the others then!
Can we get this info back? Please tell us yes! And how to do it... Thanks
