HOW DO I DELETE MY BACKUP FILES, IT SAYS THEY ARE CORRUPT AND UNREADABLE

Try this.

Start - RUN   type   CMD

In the box type       chkdsk_w:_f:_r:    (don't type in the underscores)

this will take many hours with 5 separate checks

If the final message states there are still errors, run the chkdsk again.

Then when done, right click on W: in My Computer

Go to HARDWARE tab

Find your HD

Click on it and choose PROPERTIES - then POLICIES

Choose "Optimize for quick removal"  This turn off your "WRITE DELAY" that is messing up your external drive.

when i typed chkdsk w: f: r:  in the cmd.exe. black screen it says  it says   invalid parameter f:

I don't believe you need both /f and /r: /r includes /f.  Also, you do need at least one slash IME.
