Hard Drive Backup Failed

After my first hard drive backup on a new Maxtor OneTouch III USB 2.0, the M icon on my toolbar was red in color.  According to the users guide, this indicates that the backup failed.  What exactly does that mean, and how do I prevent it from happening?

For the backup, I used the software that came with the OneTouch.  I monitored the entire backup process, and no errors or glitches occurred that were called out by the software.  The backup process seemed to finish normally.  I did not notice the red M icon at that time, but happened to notice it maybe 30 minutes after the backup had been done.  Again, during the actual backup process, nothing flashed up on the monitor that indicated there was any problem with the backup.

ANY guidance on what my problem is and how top deal with it is appreciated.

Re: Hard Drive Backup Failed

the red M symbol does mean that the backup has "failed," but that does not necessarily mean anything to you practically in the real world.

i'll bet you're backing up the entire C: drive and that means that you are attempting to backup operating system files and program files, most of which are in use during the time of the backup.
i dont think this is not a disaster recovery software so it's probably unable to make a meaningful backup of any of those files

browse through the backed-up files in the drive to the Documents and Settings and see whether your important data is present there. if so it should be fine so just ignore the red M

in the future, probably just set the backup software to backup the Documents & Settings and thats all

i think you can check the log file like this, so that might help

-techno-doulos kuriou
-if you didn't back up your junk, you didn't need it after your drive crashed

Re: Hard Drive Backup Failed

Hi

I have just had exactly the same thing happen with my Seagate Free Agent drive. At the end of its first back up I had the red symbol in the system tray. And when I go into Drive Manager and then Backup under Restore Files it says the last backup failed. However when I look on the drive in explorer all my backed up files appear to be there OK. Anyone any idea why this happens?

Thanks

Re: Hard Drive Backup Failed

I am facing a more painful problem.
1st I noticed an alert (red) that there the Backup Failed.
Now I cannot get my Maxtor OneTouch to make a backup at all.
For the time being I am synchronozing files...
but that is not the perfect way (anymore).

Run Diagnostics does ot show an error.
However the hitting the button BackUp Now gives a Backup Pregress screen, but there seems to be not any (HD) activity.
The button flickers 4 times and then keeps on.

Re: Hard Drive Backup Failed

Hi:

I'm experiencing pretty much the same thing. I have a Maxtor One Touch 4 (the plain jane) and am just backing up /my documents/ and /desktop. I had a power interruption in the middle of backing up and that's when the red dot appeared. I've tested the drive and it passed the test, but rerunning the back up doesn't make the red dot go away.

Should I reinstall?

thanks,

KrisH

Re: Hard Drive Backup Failed

I had the same problem with my tray icon changing red, when I moused over it, it said what failed.  I edited my backup settings and removed the folder it was having problems with which was Clipmate 7 and that corrected the issue for me.

Re: Hard Drive Backup Failed

I emailed Seagate Customer support & this may help you.

Thank you for contacting Seagate.

Here is what I would like you to do, please browse My Computer and explore your external drive.  You should then see a Seagate Backup folder.  In this folder will be another folder with the name of your computer, open this and you should see a C and a History folder.  I want you to rename the History folder to something like History(OLD).  Then I would like you to run another backup of your computer and see if this clears up most of the issues.  Now be sure to have all other programs closed because if they are open they will not be able to backup.

In the future when your Seagate gives you a red icon, try the above & see If it helps.:smileytongue:
