How to open a Seagate ST3000XS external drive case? Anybody?

My Seagate ST3000XS drive is past its warranty. The drive won't power up. The power brick appears to be fine and I'm suspecting the power switch on the front of the drive.

I'd like to open the external drive case to remove the drive, but can't seem to crack the case open. There are no screws. Does anyone know of a way to get the case apart?

Much appreciated!

I too am looking for a way to open up a Seagate case.  I only see one opening to insert a tool, but there doesn't seem to be any tab or screw to make use of.  Based on the noises I am hearing, I believe I need to a drive repair - I cannot afford a $1500 fee for data recovery.

The drive in question is the Seagate FreeAgent 500GB
Part Number:  9NK2ALl-500

Any help on this would be much appreciated by both myself and Tonyc25

Thanks!

- Grant

Reminder: Opening the external case yourself will VOID the warranty of the hard drive.

Thank you

Hello,
messages are some months old but for the message about hearing noises and trying to recover data (hope you could solve your problem). Recomendation would be to use warranty. Anyway, you can try to use a linux flavour live-cd (i used backtrack2 to recover data) and if lucky see that you can access the hdd and see your data.

As the first message stated, the warranty is irrelevant.

The reason Seagate support will not post instructions requested is that they are pushing data recovery services and no longer are willing to answer simple questions that would save the money of those who bought these units.

The drive I have never had any problems until the circuit board failed.
There is no reason to believe the drive itself has any problems.
I could easily move the drive to another USB enclosure if I could remove it without damaging it.

(I also installed SeaTools for Windows which was unable to detect the USB drive).

Please answer our question.

It's a Serial ATA drive inside; it is probably workable in MacOS if you install it in the Mac.

Re: How to open a Seagate ST3000XS external drive case? Anybody?

Anyone check YouTube ?   There seems to be a few out there.  The HD, is a standard PATA HD unless you have the serial version (SATA).  So the case would need to match the unit you have.  Most likely any USB 2.0 without a SATA input is a standard PATA drive.  Many of the external units provide Firewire connections.  Any external HD case (had from any local computer / electronics store) for $30+ should bring it back to life.  External HDs have been around for a few years.  Segate just made it without you having to put the parts together and adding some inexpensive backup program.
I've had an external since 2002.  It's called my old HD when I bought a new one.  It still works.
Many, many problems I've been reading have been due to the adaptor in the case.  The plug falling inside the unit or the adaptor (USB to PATA)  itself dying.
If the adaptor is dead, it just can't talk to XP / Vista and giving the error messages.  The HD is standard NTFS formatted (thank goodness). Not like the Netgear or other units that use Unix formats.

I have an eSata drive. It is not FireWire nor USB.
