Hi all, 

I have a 1TB hard drive (type listed in title) and every time I plug in the hard drive to my computer, about 300GB immediately disappears to a file which claims to be my 'back up'. I would really like to stop it from happening. Every time I delete that file, which claims to be 0kb in its properties, 300GB or so clears up. From research on google, it appears seagate drives come with this software but I use my hard drive as a storage device and want that extra 300GB back. Is there any way to turn this feature off or unistall the software without compromising what the 600GB I already have on there?

If you don't want the software, then uninstall the software. 

I'm not sure which drive you have but I haven't heard of any of the seagate software doing anything like that.

Even better is "don't install it unless you want it". Just because it comes with the drive, doesn't mean you have to install it.

I think it is probably Memeo Instant backup, which is bundled with a lot of Seagate drives.

You don't need to use it but it is better than no backup - check silence711's signature block about what a backup is.

A little less sarcasm and more sincere help would be appreciated. I'm not a novice, but also not a computer science major. I know as much about computer as your average 21 year old male. Assume that I've tried the obvious, and tried formatting the drive, going through the properties to change ownership of the file that keeps popping up (not that that did anything). Is there anyone who knows more specifically what this is?And to reitteratem, I don't want a backup capable device, i want a 1TB storage device. You may want a backup with your device. I don't.

Also, it is not memeo instant backup, it is just a shadow image of a program leaving 300GB aside for itself. It comes up as a shortcut, with no root file available and takes up that space everytime!

The drive itself should not be the problem. If you've already formatted it then it must be software on your machine that is responsible for the backup file appearing.

If it isn't Memeo then I'm pretty sure it isn't Seagate related. How about Windows backup? Have a look in Task Manager> Services to see if it's running (it's listed as SDRSVC).

You could also try to fool the software that is creating the file by changing the drive letter in Disk Management.

Do you have any more info about the 300GB file. It definitely isn't normal on Seagate drives.

(And backing up your data or not is up to you. It's just that many people think they have a backup when they copy their important files to an external drive - but then they delete the original files to make room on their PC. Some times these people are very sad and/or angry when the external drive fails)
