"Maxtor Basics External Desktop Hard Drive safely stores your work, your photos, your songs, your digital videos, your memories."
I am getting a squeaking sound repeated around every 3 seconds when I turn it on now for no apparent reason I feel like crying as it had so much of my personal stuff on it some from my family some from people that are no longer around, I counted on it to work and there was nothing really I could have backed up so much stuff on without buying another hard disk of the same size
Here is a recording of the sound:
Just the beeping is the noise from the hard disk, the moving/clunky noises are me holding my phone on the top and sides trying to make sure the noise gets picked up fully since it's hard to find out where is best to put it to get it hear the sound - I also ran it through dbPowerAmp twice with the equalizer up to maximum so that the volume would go higher so I hope that helps
It really really really sucks I feel sick to my stomach I'm trying not to think of how much stuff I had on there It was basically all the things important to me that were storable in files...
I am posting on twitter about it too which I would link if not for it being an anonymous account!
Thank you for any help! I thought I should go straight to you before I tried to do anything myself or contacted the retailer to be sure, I am scared to even use the software on your site at the moment because although the data is very important to me I am scared that plugging it in to the PC might be damaging the drive even more due to the grinding/buzzing noises it makes!
Thanks for any help

My sympathy to you.
First please try our external drive troubleshooter - http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/troublesh
If the troubleshooter doesn't resolve your problem, could you please post the report from Microsoft's UVCView utility?

Same problem with the 1 TB Maxtor basics external disk drive here.It contained data which are very valuable to me and represent years of work.
One morning (2 months ago) when powered it would make a squeaky noise every 3 seconds then silence and then the noise again. My impression is that the disk(s) inside are trying to spin, then stop and then try to spin again. Of course it is not detected by any computer.
I researched the web trying to decide weather to open the box and try to find a way to fix it while voiding my warranty or to return it. The content of my disk is so important to me that I could not decide either way. I've used Seagate and Maxtor disks for over 20 years and this is the first time I encountered a problem like this. Seeing that so many people are having exactly the same problem one would expect a company like Seagate would do something to help its customers to retrieve their data. I consider this as a major failure on Seagate's part.
I finally filled an RMA but who is going to give my data back?

Well, now it's been over 2 years and still haven't got my data back nor reply from Seagate.
Had to change my seagate username, thus my account has been appearantly deleted by Seagate admins. Thanks!
This discussion should be keep going, as there are personal reasons (lost data) and impersonal reasons (organizational responsibility and quality) in concern.
Still disappointed, but nice to notice that the issue is not yet solved
