I Have been using my maxtor basics 500g for about 5 months now. Throughout that time I have experienced quite a few of the same problems that have been outlined in other posts around this forum ( windows not recognising the drive after reboot, asking for the drive to be formatted, delayed write failures ). Although these problems have caused some level of annoyance; usually a reboot would correct them and I would be able to once again access my files ( at least until next time anyway ). However this latest occasion has left my drive Corrupt/Unreadable according to windows (XP-SP3). What happened was the same scenario which I had grown accustomed : Xp reports that I need to format the drive for it to be recognised so I reboot hoping that will fix the problem, only this time I am presented with the aforementioned error message of the drive being corrupt and unreadable upon trying to access the drive. I have tried plugging the drive into another pc, switching usb cables to no avail. Im finding this very frustrating as there is a lot of stuff on there I dont wanna loose. Reading around the forum doesn't exactly fill me with hope, it seems there a more than a few people suffering similar problems. I'd be grateful if someone could shed any light on this and maybe help me out. Also, is my data gone??? or just there but unreadable?
