Maxtor Basics 640GB External Hard Drive problems

[ Edited ]

For about six months I have a Maxtor Basics 640GB External Hard Drive to increase the storage capacity of my notebook (XP home edition). For three months the drive is acting funny, but before that there was something wrong as well.

First of all, when my drive was new my computer did not recognize it on startup, or would not let me acces the drive and said it had to be formatted first. So far so good, i found out that i could just unplug my harddrive when my computer was turned off, and plug it in after my windows started up, and all problems where gone.

Now the last few months my drive does actually work if i just leave it in the notebook (no problems with recogizing or format-errors) but there are a few things wrong:

a. My registry files are corrupted, chkdsk could not help... Though chkdsk is running at almost every startup.

b. Some files are deleted (especially the files i put there recently before the trouble began)

c. I can not write new data on the disk (it looks like my disk is writing, but the files don't appear anywhere).

The files that are still on the disk are perfectly readable, so I think this is just a software problem (as well cause there are some files just deleted).

Can anybody help me on this or should I just return the disk to the store and get a new one?
