I have at least 20 Maxtor II Touch Drives. These were orignailly on an XP computer and I had to switch to a Vista computer. Without reinstalling the Maxtor software from my installation disc I just plugged them in to the USB2 port and it gave a message "new device" and everything went fine. I just got another II Touch 300g and it seems to work (spins and the lights are on and the message stated "new device"....but the computer will not recognize it. Out of about 15 used Maxtor II drives this is the first problem I've hard.
Anyway to solve this?.

Try this, please:
And this:
1394 Front Storage Panel Driver
-From a forum user
-The download (with link to instructions)
Thing is, this hardware was released prior to the release of Vista. Therefore, it has not been thoroughly tested in that environment and is not supported by Technical Support.

I'm about to give up. The Device Manager with a click on Disk Drives shows the Drive as active. Disk Management shows it active as Disk 3 in the bottom square but does not show it in the top square that has buttons for Volume...Layout...Type...File System...Status...like the other Maxtor II drives I have. Also, using Maxtors search for the right driver it indicates that I do have the right driver. The other drives like this one all work fine. The difference between those and the one in question here is that under the Disk 3 section it shows the drive as partitioned with 279g in the largest partition and as stated above it is not shown in the upper section of the Disk Management window. At this point it behaves like the other drives except it will not give me something to open it or does it do Auto Run.

Can you please try these other things?

If that doesn't work, try reformatting the drive. Remember that this will erase the data on the drive.
