Maxtor One Touch 4 Plus Usb device not recognized

Hello Everyone.
For the longest time, I could not get my Maxtor one touch 4 plus to work on my pc that had a fresh install of windows on it until one day I turned off the firewall and then it worked like new. After rejoicing in this victory, I transferred some files to it, then safely removed it, and went to bed. This morning I tried to plug in my maxtor to get to said file and I got an error from windows saying "USB Device not recognized" and now whenever I plug it in, It finds the HD as a Maxtor One Touch, but it always says "Your hardware may not function properly". I took it to my neighbors house and it booted up fine. Anyone have a solution to this problem? Also, It doesnt show up in device manager; only as a USB Mass Storage device with a code 10 error.

Any help is appreciated~

Backup your data on a different storage media.

How appropriate since I'll be dumping my OneTouch Plus for something that really works.

I had a similar problem, then I tried swapping the Maxtor's USB cable with my digital camera's cable and the Maxtor started working again.

Genius! How can such a simple solution actually work! Everyone else was suggesting opening up the case and sticking the hardrive in a desktop tower. I have already bought a replacement drive, so now I am mirroring it to my new one (3x the size). Thanks, I owe you about an hour of my free time this afternoon (Maxtor/Seagate owes me twice that...)

Re: Maxtor One Touch 4 Plus Usb device not recognized

Win 7 OS. I had the same problem and tried the different USB cable solutiion, which didn't work. However, I experimented a little and seem to have found something that helps. Just make sure you eject the drive before unplugging it. I was unplugging the power cable to turn the drive off as I don't want it running unless I have stuff to back up. When I replugged the power cable I got the USB Device not recognized error. However, the error ceased to happen if I ejected the drive before unplugging the power cable. With the drive plugged in, an icon with a green check is visible on the right side of the task bar for a short time. After that click the up arrow on the right side of the task bar to popup the Notification Area Icons window and you see the same icon. Flyover text is "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media". Click that icon and on the resulting popup window eject the One Touch drive. Then disconnect the One Touch drive. When you plug it back in, you get the Autoplay window and can open folders on that drive. I'm not sure what to do if you leave it plugged in all the time, since maybe putting the PC to sleep could be causing it to act like an unsafe eject. Hope this helps.

There is a write cache that can be turned off.  Thats essentially what you are doing by using the safe removal tool.

One other thing:

"people of the earth:  if you plug your external drive into a POWERED USB hub, all drive recognition issues (especially having to power off/on the dang thing) dissapear like magic."  :smileywink:

Re: Maxtor One Touch 4 Plus Usb device not recognized - my personal rant

[ Edited ]

What I find interesting is that we all buy this drive under the impression that it will be reliable for the purpose it was intended for. When the packaging says "Onetouch backup" and the software included on the drive is for backing up your data that seems rather clear to me.

Personally, I feel that charging for a refurbished replacement drive, phone support and data recovery services is just bad business practices. [Per Guidelines: Legal talk of any kind is not allowed.]

When the labeling on the box says "Maxtor Onetouch" and the contents is a Seagate drive that is false advertising. Personally I would like the data recovery done for free and a refund on the refurbished drive they shipped me. This new drive will not bring back 4 years of work for a batch of bad drives that have not been QA properly.

The art of deflection has not died, it is easier to blame the consumer and assume they have no clue what they are doing than to accept responsibility for your errors and correct them. There is a sucker born everyday and by this forum and other posts it is rather obvious. The thing I struggle with is if you want to shop for a better product will Seagate drives be hidden in the enclosures too?

You get what you pay for and what I am finding maybe buying from a reliable source like "China" maybe the solution to the problem. Don't complain when people do not buy American made products when the customer service is overseas, they read from a script, you pay for support even though the product is under warranty and you are blamed for the cause of their products.

Welcome to the new techno world where anonymity and finding new ways to nickel and dime people to death with poor customer service like the airlines are doing. Can't beat them join them.

I have tried EVERYTHING that has been put out there to fix this issue.  I stumbled upon this post, low & behold changing the USB cord fixed the problem, how crazy is this!?
