External Drive
Maxtor One Touch 4 Plus 500GB

USB Connection
Computer
HP Pavillion M9040N
2 Dual Core Processors
4 GB RAM
650 Internal HDD
32 bit
Vista V6
Drive used to store files for 1 peer to peer file sharing program to access.
Files from preloaded software still on drive and can see files. I try to access files, receive error Windows cannot access the file specified, check spelling or path. Preloaded files also copied to C:\Program Files\Maxtor as per installation instructions.
When relocated from CA to TX and setup computer the Maxtor icon did not appear with the reconnection of the drive, but drive appeared in computer window as a drive attached. Did not think much on this as had not used the manager previously. Backups were run with another program. The Manager icon has again appeared in the system tray with trying to backup Maxtor or have it working.
A few days ago the drive started to not be recognized when the machine was booted. To get the drive to be recognized had to disconne4ct USB and power and let drive spin down. Reconnect power and then USB and the drive appears as a drive in computer window. . I noticed that files being uploaded by associates were having multiple problems, such as time out, being queued when total number of uploaders had not been reached. Files were from 200MB to 3.00GB. Also tried to copy and move files from Maxtor to a new file location on another drive, backup was lost when Free Agent 2TB was damaged.
Maxtor would freeze causing computer to freeze, requiring a complete power down. Computer will also not shut down or boot if Maxtor is attached. Maxtor also feels hot to the touch.
Is the Maxtor, Free Agent, Go Flex not engineered to have multiple simultaneous computers accessing the drive and files. This was main purpose for drive acquisition.
What is best method to get backup of data on Maxtor or to get Maxtor back to performing or to retrieve data, is approximately 460GB. I am feeling because of the heat to the touch issue that the drive is in serious failure.
Any help suggestions appreciated
