Maxtor One Touch 4 Plus not recognized in Vista

[ Edited ]
OK I am transitioning from one XP laptop to a Vista laptop and thought that it would make sense to use a external hard drive to tranfer my files.  Well first off I tried to hook my Ultra external HD up to my vista machine only to realize that it was not compatible :-( shouldent that be a simple driver!!! anyway because i did not have time i went to Staples and purchased a One Touch 4 Plus and uploaded the files i wanted to transfer from my XP computer (XP instantly recognized the drive and i was on my way).  I then hooked the One Touch to my Vista Machine and it went thru the install hardware cycle and decided it did not have the correct drivers.  i even used the included disk but to no avail.  the One Touch just won't hook up to my vista machine.

Please let me know what  am doing wrong or if I should see how far Maxtor can fly.

Can you tell that I am a little frustrated???  :-(((((

I really don't know if I should hate Vista or Maxtor or both.

Re: Maxtor One Touch 4 Plus not recognized in Vista

Hey Jimtc,

I had/have the same problem!
Only additionally, after I tried to connect to my new Toshiba-VISTA laptop, it would not hook up with my new XP-PC anymore either!
I bought a new PC because my XP was suddenly so corrupted, that it would not boot. No repair with the XP CD either. My HDs checked out okay, so now I have 3 HDs on my PC (XP powered).
BUT still the same problem with the Maxtor!

It appears under Device-Manager, reports as working correctly, but it does not show under MyPC or the WIndows Explorer.
Also the Maxtor User Interface is no where to be found....

I am in correspondance with Seagate customer Support, but until now all I get is instructions how to update the driver via Windows CD, Windows update, Windows SP1 (by now I have SP 1-3 installed....)

The Maxtor shows up with the light in the front, it obviously runs, my PC recognizes it under Device-Manager, but I can´t access it....

Did you find any solution?

Best Regards,

Re: Maxtor One Touch 4 Plus not recognized in Vista

I have a similar issue, not being detected when connecting to Vista after doing a backup from XP.  i password protected the OneTouch4 mini on XP before that PC died, and something in the troubleshooting URL suggests this is why it might not be detected in Vista.  However when i try to download the software for OneTouch4 mini i am told to email Seagate Support.  The disk currently shows in Disk management as Disk 1 unallocated.

Does anyone have a link to get this software ...i can;t remember what it's called but it's the software that comes on the OneTouch mini which I used to install the first time.

This link is useless

http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?locale=en-US&name=ot4-mini&vgnextoid=7fd5783de3444110VgnVCM100...

As an aside, can someone in Seagate explain why a) the software is not provided as a CD but is preloaded onto the OneTouch4 mini itself, which I can;t now access b) why that software is not available on the Seagate website?  Have Seagate support got nothing better to do than email links to customers rather than just providing this information in an accessible way?

Re: Maxtor One Touch 4 Plus not recognized in Vista

I have the same problem as the rest of you, and read in the FAQ that the installation software will not load on Vista if you have a 64-bit operating system.  The FAQ says if you have a 64 bit system, your computer may recognize the One Touch 4 as an external storage device, but the installation software will not load.  I checked my G drive, where the software began to load, and lo and behold, it does recognize the One Touch 4 as a storage device.  I'm going to try to operate it manually without the software, which is far from ideal but at least a possible solution.  Hopefully this is helpful.

I cannot figure out how to use the storage device without the software.  Unless someone else can figure it out, I would say this is a useless device for a Vista/64-bit system.

You know it's funny you would think that the company would have enough comon sence to let people know that if you have vista with the 64 bit NOT to waste you're money buying this thing, Apparently all of their money is being spent on the amazing customer service and thats why they couldnt afford to tell you that on the box.

Re: Maxtor One Touch 4 Plus not recognized in Vista

Do you know how much software is NOT made for MAC.. user base... or $$$  There is not that many $$$ out there for MAC software.

At 8% of the market.

Vista is bad enought... 64bit Vista is really a business product.  Businesses will use professional backup software that will run in 64 bit.

That external will be recognized by that professional Software.

I can't tell you how many schools and businesses are staying away from Vista.  Even XP 64 did not have many programs and drives for years.

Vista 64 should have it's own backup software built in.  My Vista Business does.  Use that !

The box stated the operating system the software works with.... they didn't hide it.

I am certain there are tons of programs not written for Vista 64.

This product is for typical home users... and priced that way.  Just look at the price of a 64bit backup program.. two or three times the cost of the drive.  Segate/Maxtor will not off that in the same package.

Should Maxtor/Segate offer a 64 bit product at a small additional cost.

Sure..

Re: Maxtor One Touch 4 Plus not recognized in Vista

With all due respect MrButkus, I don't think your assessment is fair at all.  I have the box right here in front of me and nowhere on it does it say One Touch 4 Plus doesn't work for 64-bit systems.  Moreover, I bought my new computer at Best Buy for home use, not business use.  The computer was on clearance and wasn't a new model.  If 64 bit systems are being sold to home users, then the companies that manufacture storage devices for home use should at least have a software patch to make the product compatible.  I bought the One Touch to back up my old computer with an XP operating system and to transfer documents, music, photos, etc. to my new computer.  I believe this is the same situation others who have posted here are in.  If Vista and 64-bit are the wave of the future and XP and 32-bit are on the way out, there needs to be some way to transfer data from an old system to a new one.  If the One Touch 4 Plus is not that system, it should be clearly marked and not hidden in a FAQ that took me about an hour to find.

The point you made about Apple may be true but is irrelevant to this discussion.
