Maxtor One Touch III Mini - Solution to EasyManage Crash on Windows XP

[ Edited ]
I bought a Maxtor One Touch III Mini external drive [120GB] couple of months back. This has been working good on my Windows XP operating system until last week and all of a sudden started throwing the following error “Maxtor EasyManage has encountered a problem and needs to close. Please inform Microsoft about this.” This error came up every time I accessed the drive by connecting through USB and also when tried to open the EasyManage software installed on the computer [even when the drive was not attached]. Tried to solve this problem by searching on net as well as by going to the user forums on seagate.com. None of those helped me. I have listed the step by step info on how to solve this issue on my blog at www.codecritic.in/blog

Start all these steps by disconnecting the drive from your computer.

Cheers!
Mohan

Re: Maxtor One Touch III Mini - Solution to EasyManage Crash on Windows XP

Thanks so much for this post.
I had this problem with one of my computers, and older Dell running Windows XP SP2.  My laptop and other desktop were fine.  This system also had a wierd issue with network shares, that I never spent time to get to the bottom of.  At any rate, running in windows 2000 compatability mode fixed it.  Thanks for the blog post!
I ended up trashing this computer primarily because it wouldn't work with the Maxtor, the upgraded machine works fine... I finally got things working to transfer the old data off the old computer before making it a "project" machine.

Re: Maxtor One Touch III Mini - Solution to EasyManage Crash on Windows XP

Thank you Mohan for a partial solution.

After setting EasyManage to run in W2000 compatibility mode, the program no longer crashes. But sadly, EasyManage cannot find the OneTouch III USB drive for all non-Admin users. The software only works for an Administrator account.

Has anybody successfully ran EasyManage in a non-Admin user account?

Merry Christmas,
Alvian.

Re: Maxtor One Touch III Mini - Solution to EasyManage Crash on Windows XP

I have found an alternative (better) solution. Switch to the OneTouch 4-Lite driver. (OneTouch 4 Lite Software Download) This driver caters for all versions of OneTouch and works for all types of users (although I haven't tried Guest). BUT MaxSync does not work anymore, even though the manual says it will.

If the above hyperlink does not work, the driver is in Support > Downloads > Maxtor OneTouch 4 Family Downloads > Maxtor OneTouch 4 Family Software Downloads

Re: Maxtor One Touch III Mini - Solution to EasyManage Crash on Windows XP

I have had the problem with the error message mentioned here with the Maxtor Easy Touch III, and tried the compatibility solution.  This worked, but, curiously, only for a while.  I recently plugged my harddrive in to backup my work data, and started to get the error message again.  I verified that the compatibility check box was checked, & windows 2000 selected...still had the problem.

I decided to try the other options, and selected the "Turn off advanced text services for this program", selected Apply, OK, and the error went away.  Not sure what that check box is for, but I wonder if it depends upon a service that was not running and so threw the error?

Anyway, in my case I needed the "Compatibility mode" check box and the "Turn off advanced text services for this program" check box selected to make this error go away.
