Maxtor One Touch III hdd replacement

Hi,

I have old Maxtor One Touch III 1TB ( EDA-9MP446-326) and one of its hard drives is broken. I successfully disassembled the box and tested both drives. One is fine the other not. Both are sata drives. Problem is that the box does not start with just one drive (windows / linux don't detect it - flash light is blinking like power save mode). Do I have to use 2 drives to run the box ? I tested some older sata drive (80GB) and it does not help.

What can I do ? The box it self is well crafted and I want to use it in the future.

Thanks

PS: its out of warranty ofc.

Re: Maxtor One Touch III hdd replacement

I don't know anything about your One Touch III, but if you can show us some detailed photos of the innards, maybe one of us could help.

Does the faulty drive spin up? If the faulty drive is installed in the enclosure, does it prevent the good drive from spinning up? Have you tried attaching the drives to your computer's motherboard?

Do you have a multimeter? If so, can you measure the resistances between ground and each of the +5V and +12V supplies at the SATA power connector?

Here is the pinout:

Re: Maxtor One Touch III hdd replacement

Here are some photos ( sorry for poor quality its form mobile phone )

I tested both drives after disassembly in PC. One is running fine, the second is typical HW failure.

Do I really have to measure the resistance. When I mount new drive ( replacing the old one ) both drivers are spinning. When I run the box with one drive its spinning too.

My guess is that firmware / bios  from sata to usb controller needs two same drives.

There is no need to measure resistances. I was looking for shorted TVS diodes. Obviously they are all OK.

What is the model number and firmware version of your failed drive?

I need info about hard drive replacement in the external box. Two 1TB at best.

Maarty, I don't know if you are pinging me or the community, but I did send you a private message.

Basically, I don't know the answer to your question. :-(

Re: Maxtor One Touch III hdd replacement

Hi,

I succesfully replaced two OneTouch III Turbos HDs with Hitachi 1TB HDs and a third one with Hitachi 750GB HDs. They are still in use. Once I put in two Hitachi 2TBs, but there were only 900GB recognized per HD by the box.1TB per (internal) HD seems to be the limit having 2TB total or 1TB in RAID1 what I am using.
