Hi,
Can someone please help me out. I have been looking everywhere for some info but haven't found any as of yet.
I bought a Maxtor OneTouch 4 1TB (PN: 9NT2AL-500) not even 2 months ago. Since then I had backed up all my files onto the drive... 2 weeks later the drive lost all parition information and files along with it. I managed to recover all my files... Thank god! So since then I had to repartition and format drive to be able to use it but I kept a copy of my files on other drive just in case and it's a good thing I did because the samething happened again... Considering this drive is for backup purposes, I can't even trust it to even store temp files on it.
I have also reinstalled Windows XP from scratch thinking maybe I had a bug in my OS install but looks like that's not the case.
Has anyone else experienced this? How did you fix it? Is there a firmware patch maybe? Or should I just take the drive back?
I have 2 other external drives which I have never had a problem with so I am confident the problem is not from my system setup.
Thanks in advance for all help and advice given.

Well since my last posting, I have done more testing. I found that the drive loses all partition information everytime I reboot the computer. I also tested this on a laptop and I have the extact same problem. It's almost like the drive is not recording the partition information in memory and it continues to reset at reboot.
Any suggestions?

Hmmm...
Run the OneTouch 4 test my drive thing on it and see if it finds any bad sectors.
I would also try to run a complete wipe and see if it acts the same afterwards. Make sure you backup first.
Use the OneTouch software to create a password. Then safely remove the drive.
Wait 30 seconds.
Reconnect it. Launch the OneTouch software again if necessary. It should act like it's locked. Pretend you forgot the password and then choose to Erase the disk. It'll take a while, I think.
Then see what happens.
Or you can try this for the wipe: http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/
